73 911e targa

heres a few questions i have for everyone. im restoring a 73 911 e targa. first question is. when i was stripping the paint to bare metal, there was no chip guard on the rockers like on my 85 3.2. should there be any chip guard on a 73. i did find some on the lip of the wheel wells. also on my car the electric antenna is on the passenger side. i had to buy 2 used fenders for the car. the used fenders have them on the drivers fender. which side should the antenna be on?? any help would be awesome. thanks tony

Manual antenna's are on the drivers side fender while power antenna's are on the passenger...if your car is an original power antenna just weld in the extra hole.

Cheers,

No chip guards on a '73. The PO must have installed after market. The chips fall where they may. (sorry)

When you say chip guard are you referring to a piece of trim, or the spray on gravel guard that goes under the paint?

If it is the spray on stuff, I don't think any car in the world had that stuff in 1973.

Unless I am mistaken (I could be)
The closest things back then was undercoating inside the fenders.

if you're restoring the car to pristine 1973 existence, then you shouldn't use the chip guard.

if you are rebuilding the car for current use, then i would most definitely spray chip guard.

Could the chip guard you are referring to be body shutz? If so I believe 73 did have shutz sprayed on the underside of fender lip where the red arrow is pointing. Others with more knowledge will chime in.

I have two 1973's Coupe and Targa, no chip guard on rockers, but all four wheel wells have chip guard.

If still in the wheel wells that is a very good sign the fenders are original. Both my cars are original paint, but one car had a ding on right fender and in 1988 was touched up and the SOB removed the chip guard.

I agree with drcoastline , the bodyshutz was applied to the edging of the wheel wells and also to the rockers although on most cars the rockers where covered by aluminum covers. Without this stuff gravel makes a racket in the wheel wells. In a 73 the wheel wells are body color applied over the Wurth Bodyshutz.
May I suggest that you visit and join www.911Sregistry.org as there is specific knowledge there on the pre74 cars.

wgwollet: yes thats what my wheel well lips have. where the red arrow is. the rockers doesnt have any chip guard to it, unlike my 85 3.2. but the car was repainted before. so with the car in the body shop ready for paint. should i have him put the stone guard on the lip of the wheel wells?????

My opinion is yes you should spray the shutz on the under lip I believe that to be correct. If you also look in the pic I posted you will see the shutz IS on the rocker as well it is then painted body color. For what it is worth I have a 74 and my car has shutz on the lower rockers from the factory.
