Coupe rear window seal question.

After 8 years of sitting (life, wife and kids taking priority over hobbies) I'm in the home stretch of completing repairs to my old 911.

One of the tasks is installing the rear glass. I purchased new front and rear seals several years ago and I can't recall if it was from our host or another supplier but I'm sure it was not from the dealer.

When I place the seal on the glass it is extremely tight in the corners preventing the lip of the trim from holding it in place. I can get it to 'snap' into place with a lot of effort, but it will not hold. I should mention that my trim was mangled due to a prior incident but I followed the forum's recommendation and spent a few hours manipulating it to make sure it follows the contour of the glass.

For those that have installed the rear glass, is the rear seal suppose to be this tight in the corners?

One can see where the inside portion of the seal is stretched tight causing its to pull down on the outside corners and making the installation of the trim a challenge. Its like this in all four corners.

Normal or purchase another seal?

Thank you,

Tinker

You should be able to pull and stretch the seal some to get more "meat " on the corner. The VW ghia's are very similar and I've done alot of them! I usuall pull from the center top and bottom to the outside corners and make sure everything seems even, also set the seal in the sun for awhile before starting.

A trick with the molding is to use the glass itself to bend the molding back to the correct shape, use the glass as a template.

I have had the same problem before. The repro seals have issues at the corners. A few weeks ago I had some body repairs done around the rear window opening. The body man went to install the rear glass, to make sure there would be no issues after the paint work was complete. I had a new repro seal, and the fit was not good at the corners, and could not be installed. I found the old factory seal and the install was easy for him. This is not the easiest thing to install for a non pro. Get a factory seal . Some people use tape to hold the metal in place, but the professional did not need it , once he had the factory seal.
