Porsche Crest I want to take my daughter with me in my 911!

Everybody,

Does anybody know what CURRENTLY AVAILABLE car seats will fit in the back of a '69-89 911?

I know this comes up every now and then, but I haven't been able to find any useful information that's current.

Thanks a lot!

-Dan

(No, that isn't an Audi symbol, although my last two daily drivers were Audis. My daughter loves bugs, and that is a caterpillar!)

take your 911 to kids-r-us (or equivalent) and talk to the sales person about trying out the available car seats in the car. doing this will give you an idea which car seats will or will not fit in the back of the 911.

then take your daughter to the store and select the one that works best out of the subset of those that fit.

fyi, when i was taking my kids to preschool in the 911, my daughter's car seat was placed in the front passenger seat. i don't remember if i ever put the car seat in back, but perhaps it didn't fit and perhaps there was no reason to do so.

I pulled up to babys-R-us some weekend morning when they weren't too busy and asked if I could test fit the various car seats. I tried maybe 10 and picked the one that fit best.

I replaced the seat belt with a fixed lap belt I bought online so I could tighten the seat down. It was still scooting around a bit, so I used a cargo strap through the seat and then around the seat back - didn't serve a structural retention purpose, just kept the seat from moving around.

I got a lot of laughs showing up at my first DE with a car seat strapped in the car - but I had to pick up the kids from daycare on the way back. They made me remove it, which was a royal PITA ...

Happily the back seats are basically booster seats, so the baby seat time is limited.

I bought the Volvo booster seat for my 911. It fits better than any other I have found.

I put both of my grommets in the front as that is where the 3-points are in the '87's I have. Son is in a Britax Marathon that works with 3-point belts and daughter is in a Recaro booster.

My 8 year old rides in front in both the 84 911 and the 2002 because of the 3 pt belts.

The booster that fit in the 89 C4 does not fit in the 84, so we'll just have to wait until the 2 year old gets bigger before she can ride in the Poor-sha!

I was just at Sam's Club tonight. Saw some nice looking seats for "big" kids but not sure what the primary harness configuration is like.

After assistance from threads on this site I went with a Britax Compaq deluxe for the 2yr old (still currently avail)

For the 4yr old I put him in a Baby Love booster (not sure if this would be avail in the USA)

WOW That thing is HUGE! ...but if it fits in the "seat" back there, then I'm all for it. I'll see what I can find over here in the 'states.

Thanks a lot for the lead!

I just dont think it will work in your car...we should trade, that will allow you more space and I guess I could drive that old thing around for a few years for you till she grows up enough to ride in the front

(wishful thinking...she's gonna love my idea)

i bought one of these, not intended for the 911 but when we were on holidays in orlando we had forgotten to bring the boaster seat and stopped by the walmart. it actually fits in the back seat of the 911 very well better than the graco seats with the cut holders. i was going to make my own with some ensolite foam but didn't need to in the end. i know your car probably didn't come with belts at all but if you're only using lap belts on the rear, you probably don't need any boaster at all. here in wa state, if your car isn't equiped with shoulder belts and your child is over 4 they can just use the lap.

Nope. Sorry. I have both kinds of the Recaros. One set in van and one in X5. Neither will even come close to fitting. Here is what I did. See post 227

I understand the desire. My kids have grown up in the back seats of my 911.
We have to show the next generation what it's all about!

Go to Target or Walmart and look at the Cosco High Back Booster. The base of the seat is perfectly tapered to the rear seat in a 911. Plus the seat basically replicates the shape of a racing shell seat...it's not a big, puffy, bloated child seat.

On thing I highly recommend is that you install upper tether points to prevent the seats from rolling forward. Visit this link for tons of details: car seat for children - Rennlist Discussion Forums

I love your solution! I think repeating your design for the back seat will be a future (mid term) project for me.

... Amazing. It looks very secure!

One final question: is the setup DOT legal?

Great post.

Anyone running a tether setup in a '84-'89 Cabriolet? I'm just trying to figure out a good tether/attachment point and hardware solution that would work with the top up or down. I don't have the shoulder belts in the '85 that IIRC the 964/993's might have.

Any pics of such tether setups would be greatly appreciated.

I already planned to install the upper latch points, I've noticed how well they work in more modern, "family" cars.

I'll head by my friendly local Wal Mart as soon as I can and see if I can find that seat. Even if they don't show up on the sales floor, they are readily available online. Thanks so much for the lead!

Cheers,
Dan

I placed my kids in the front (NOT at the same time!). I could not find a car seat that worked well in the back. I had to place a large towel under the car seat, then use the "H" clip to get the seat nice an tight. I put the seat back, BACK first, installed the car seat with the towel and "H" clip, then yanked the seat back up again. This made for a REALLY tight fit for the car seat (it did NOT move at all).

Only two of us could ride in the car, but it was the safest thing I could figure out with my '86 911 (the last year the car came without rear shoulder harnesses).
