cold start valve on 73 911 E

My cold start stopped working so I now run it right off the starter (engaging the starter sends 12 volts to the enrichment solenoid that sends gas directly down the stacks). Works great but can flood the engine when started hot. What is supposed to tell the cold start circuit not to work when the car is hot?

Thanks,

Chris,

73 911 E - MFI

You could always install an on/off switch in the cab...

Kind of a smart ass answer, but I've flown several airplanes that had electric primers. Sort of the same thing.

I have contemplated the same thing (the switch) but would like to see if I can fix it right before I make my jerry rig more perminant.

From a thread that's a few years old.

After a few starting attempts the switch will be so warm that is does not close anymore, hence no extra fuel through the cold start injectors

A pic would be great as I know what it's called but not what it looks like.

Many Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

It looks like this

and on my old 73E, it was on top of the engine just to the right of the MFI injection pump.

I installed a push-button type switch in my 73 T, there's a perfect spot on the dash, just to the right of the steering column, kinda opposite the ignition switch. If you reach up behind the dash, you find the factory hole, no drilling.

I think I see the thermo switch. Kind of hard to see without taking the air cleaner housing off but it looks like it sticks out of the oil...cover to the right of the MFI pump.

Does it complete the circuit when cold and break it when hot? (hopefully) In other words, if I install the wire from the starter to the Thermo switch and the other side of the thermo switch to the cold start solenoid. This should stop the cold start from working when the engine is hot. yes? If no my solution gets more complicated.

I am hesitant to install a switch or anything that is not stock. The value of these cars is largely in originallity. It is easy to slowly but shorly get further and further away from the way it is supposed to be.

Yep, it's called a thermotime switch and is installed in the crankcase breather cover on the rear center of the engine. Our host sells replacements: Porsche 911 Mechanical Fuel Injection - Page 1

The switch is closed when cold, open when hot.

perfect and thanks,

Last question, does the Thermo time switch do anything other than the cold start circuit? Will I freak somthing out by sending 12 volts from the starter through the switch?

Sorry, no switch here. If I was to do one, would prob just mount it to the rear tunnel cover. Only need to use the switch when starting a hot engine (to turn off the cold start).

Hi Thor, in my case, last Summer i got stranded three times. All three times it was hot out and I couldn't get re-started. Finally figured out that the solenoid that sits above the fuel filter and feeds those small cold start lines in the stacks, wasn't working or wasn't getting the signal from the CS switch. I found a cool push button switch that surprisingly looks stock. I wired the switch directly to my new push button switch now installed in the dash, almost opposite the ignition.

Now, when I push the switch, I can here a click as the squirt of fuel is released.

I've only had to use it a few times since I installed it but I'm glad I have it.

Hope that helps you.

Steve
