Question 1969 911 :2 pistons 2 holes

My son purchased a 67 -911 with a bad motor... Upon teardown, engine has 1 piston each side with a hole burned in center, 3rd cylinder had 2 broken rockers..bearings show signs of trash ran through but no blown rods, no valve damage. The plugs were tossed so no clues there. .. any ideas out there on the carnage ?? (Engine was purported to be an S but has L pistons in it.) We assume it was run lean but the rocker damage dont add..
correction: It is a 1967 not 69 on heading ..sorry

Try the Engine Rebuild forum and provide lots of pictures. some of the best builders in the world are there so they might be able to answer your ?'s better.

Burned hole in piston is usually a lean condition. It likely seized and the rest of the engine damage occurred. Just my experience.

thanks for the welcome Dan, there is a little learning cure to navigate this site which is great and super freindly gear heads..I guess there is 2 carbs really leaned out to cause the meltdown as the damage was just 2 and not all of them..nothing seized but the bearings were marginal. All advice appreciated!

Yes, two carbs, and further, each carb is kind of three seperate units. Each carb throat feeds a single cylinder with it's own mixture, instead of the mixture going into a plenum like on a V8 manifold. The throttle is shafted through and all 3 open/close together. #1 biggest trick is synching the left and right side linkages so that all six holes open/close simultaneously. Then move onto the individual mixture/air adjustments for each hole.

The carbs that come on 911 engines (zenith, weber, I think Solex as well, and if you have money for new stuff, PMO's) are really cool. Much more adjustment is available for fine tuning - for precisely matching the air/fuel to that individual cylinder, than an American V8 manifold.

But the ability to also have one or more than one hole run lean do to clogged jet or other issue is absolutely possible.
