Something ain't right
Been meaning to post this for a while but I've been so busy with work I haven't had the time to worry with it.
I had some work done on the car recently by a local shop - one of the things was the odometer needed to be fixed and asked them to look for bad ground in the dash area as I was having some weird issues like turn signals work for a while. Then stop, then come back again with no apparent rhyme or reason. Long story short, turn signal stalk was replaced in the process. Since I got the car back, it suddenly occurred to me one day that the seat belt buzzer, door buzzer and the you-left-the-headlights-on buzzer don't work. Also when I turn the key to the first position I now hear the fuel pump engage and I don't remember that being the case prior to having the work done. Any ideas where to start looking? |

look under the dash for loose wires. Did they replace the stalk with same year unit or different year? Harness may be slightly different.
My intermittent signalling was due to a bad relay and nothing to do with the stalk. -Michael

If your car is an 83 as indicated under your name, then the fuel pump should not run with the ignition in the "on" position. First suspect is the fuel pump relay--swap a known good one and see if the pump behaves correctly. Second suspect is the connection to the air flow sensor, located in the engine compartment, close to where the engine harness connects to the 14-pin connector. If the sensor wire is disconnected, the pump will run with the ignition in the "on" position.
As far as the other problems--various buzzers--it may be an electrical connection on the ignition switch shaft. I'm not familiar with an 83, but on earlier models there is an electrical connection on the shaft that holds the pin for the steering wheel lock. The connection is for a simple switch that is activated when the key is turned and the pin retracts into the ignition switch. If you look under your dash and look at the shaft, you should be able to see the connection (if you have one). Since you had work done on the light stalk, it's possible working around the dash area unplugged the connection.

if the sensor plate contact plug if disconnected, the pump runs with the key on. left arm, reach way in on the left side, take a right and feel around the front of the sensor plate housing for the plug.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I will take a look this weekend and report back.
JW, might be a crazy question at first but I have to ask. Would the fuel pump turning on a half second before the starter motor possibly improve a cold start problem? |

On my '82 there's a relay missing way back up in the dash as viewed from the trunk near the (US) driverside door. (There's another relay up in there close to this empty socket.) I think the missing relay is for the seat-belt buzzer among other things. I never new the car was supposed to have one of those buzzers, and I don't really miss it.
