What are these (from inside muffler)?
I purchased a used muffler which arrived this week, and when I shook it something was rattling around inside it. After rocking it back and forth, these started coming out the tailpipe. After rocking it back and forth many times, I've gotten the majority of them out, but I'm curious as to what they are? And no, they're not rodent poop (I don't think anyway

Deposits from the engine and your muffler. Depending how old the muffler is and the engine it came off of those are oil/gas deposits and the inside of the muffler that has scabbed off.

They don't really feel or look like rust, and they seem too big to be pieces of the inside of the muffler. Is this pretty typical for an old muffler (this one is for a mid 70's car, with the smog tube connector)?

I bet it's oil that has dripped down from the exhaust valves and hang like little stalactites in the head exhaust ports until they get crispy and blow off.

Looks like carbonized dog food. Has you car ever spent any time in storage?

OK - I will succumb to these cads making jokes. If you find yourself in this position with the pellets - just take the helmet off and back away a bit.

I always wondered what muffler bearings looked like. Now I know.

I've never considered this "problem" before, but you might consider taking it somewhere like a radiator shop and having it hot-tanked/boiled out. It's probably going to sound the same, but you never know. Definitely want to hit it with some heat paint.

Thanks for all the, um, help, gang. . . .
![]() Yes, I plan on prettying up the outside w/ some hi temp paint. I bought it because my muffler has several holes in it and when I had it off last summer we tried to patch/weld them and made it worse. I've gotten all the pellets/eggs/bearings/dog food out and she's rattle free. For now, until they multiply that is ![]()
