Today, I Saw the Promised Land
Visited a friend's future business partner today. Behind his house he's got a 32x40 foot insulated, heated building with 14 foot ceiling and glossy epoxy floor. Pretty standard, so far. Now the good part - lining the walls were a CNC mill, valve grinder, sand blast chamber, TIG & plasma welders, various drill presses and grinders, air compressors, cylinder boring machine, band saws, hoists, tool cabinets up the wazoo, etc., etc. Everything is brand new. And, of course, a small office with satellite TV and bathroom! The guy has an S10 pickup with a twin-turbo V8 with nitrous that runs 8.0's in the 1/4!! It's streetable. Also builds go-karts. Oh yeah, and a big Harley. And this is all just a hobby. I'm still in awe. -- Curt

Life is NOT fair, but even with all that he isn't smart enough to own a Porsche? We win.

Curt...not all promised lands contain P-cars. I have seen it as well, owned by the owner of a local "wrecked-em" yard. All the tools & goodies, a wall full of NASCAR model cars, the custom painted snap-on rollaway chock full of tools that looked unused, a seperate wash room, complete with hot & cold runnung water, drain in the floor, the coke machine, the pinball machines, the pool table, and of course the bathroom & shower. And the cars? American muscle all...MOPAR 300 series, 3 of them, including an F...4 years of GTO's, '64 thru '67, all mint Two '67's, one a ragtop with all the luxury goodies with vanity plate "hers" and then the coupe, with all the go fast goodies, vanity plate "his" matching color....a couple of SS chevelles, one a 454 ragtop. All hidden behind a modest house off the highway. Heated, alarmed, the entire ball of wax. Obviously, there is cash in wrecked cars! My mind couldn't compute the value...a lot! Yes, some people have more disposable income than us mere mortals...a cruel fact of life.

The key in this case is the guy's marital status. Or lack thereof! Single, 43 years old, small business owner. Well, I've got 2 out of the 3 qualifications. It's that marital thing that keeps getting in the way of my checkbook. -- Curt

Sorry Curt, but just the opposite with Ed here...married many years, to the same woman. Probably early 50's now. Happiest day in his life was when his wife gave him a son 10 years ago or so. A true "family guy", all the way. This guy amazes me...to look at and talk with him, first impression is he's a cast member from the movie Deliverance. Very UN good looking, a HUGE man, not easy to understand because of his "country" accent. But between the ears? Gotta be a lot there... I suspect this country contains many people like him...successful, and simply enjoying the success in their own way. More power to them all!
