Poor boy stalls his 911 repeatedly
I had my transmission rebuilt (84 911) last week, that’s the good part. Shifts “snick” “snick”. However, at the same time I replaced the clutch and that’s the problem.
I just can’t get used to this clutch. As I let the pedal out ..there’s nothing, nothing, nothing then bang! We’re going! There seems to be some spring that pulls the clutch in and pulls the pedal back just as it begins to engage, the force against my foot increases dramatically just at the point where I’d like to feather it. I can keep the revs high and dump the clutch, but that’s not exactly good manners in every situation. I have always driven a stick shift; cars, motorcycles or trucks and I just can’t get used to this damn clutch. When I picked the car up after the trany rebuild, I just thought “I’ll get used to it” and “the clutch needs to break in” that was a week ago. My buddy that drives a hay truck says “yeah, all new clutches are like that” This is NOT a hay truck. Today running an autocross I must have stalled it half a dozen times while dinking around on the grid and in the parking lot (the running of the course was no problem). It doesn’t seem to be getting any better after a couple hundred miles of driving and one autocross. Any clues? I think I am going to have to take it back to the shop that did the rebuild and ask the mechanic if it feels right to him, ‘cause it doesn’t to me. Any help or experience appreciated. Best Regards Andy |

I would take it back too. I just had my clutch rebuilt and it's tight. Very little play in it. When I release, it grabs, but with just enough play I can control it. I love it. I just have to make sure I push it in all the way each time.

Andy,
I'm glad someone else has had that experience, at the same time I hope you get it worked out. A little over a year ago I drove several 915 cars, SC's and Carrera's. I've driven manual trans cars since I started driving, but I ran across the same feeling in all of those cars that you describe. clutch would come out fine right up to the point where it would start to grab and then pedal effort would increase. It reminds me of pulling back on a compound bow, hard to pull at first, but then once you get it back much less effort. Since it seems as though this is a new issue for you I'm beginning to wonder if maybe its one of the springs in the clutch mechanism? Did they break the "omega" spring when they changed things out? I'll be watching this thread to see what the decision is. Since I ended up with a G50 car it ended up not being a problem for me.

I just replace clutch cable on my 83 and the release is up at the top now instead of on the bottom. I think my old cable was really stretched. It was pretty frayed too. It took some getting used to but I prefer it at the top.
