Seat support rails - do I need them???

Hi all,

I need some technical advice relating to the need for the seat rail supports or their application. The part number is 911 521 051 01, there are two identified in the parts manual for the standard seat, however there is no mention of them in the sport seat option. Is there a difference in the dimensions of the standard seat base and the sport seat base? Also is there a difference between the '72 year model and '73 year model, or a difference in the actual seat bases between those years? My car is '73.

I'm not anywhere close to my car so am unable to measure or check this myself, but wanted to order some parts so they will arrive prior to my returning home from work.

Any information or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Chris

Chris,

Above is the exploded diagram for a stock seat from the PET. The part you are calling out is number 11.

This part is attached to the car and part 12 is attached to the seat base. When the seat is installed, together they make the mount and slider for the seat. You need to look at your tub to see if you have this part already in place.

The sport seats use a different series of parts. It consists of some rails attached to the body and then a special frame to mount the seat to the rails.

For either seat, some of the parts for the the 1973 car have different part numbers than the earlier cars.

Thanks for the information Harry.

My tub does not have any of the fittings unfortunately, the seats that were in the car were later model sports seats, I also had a single '67 sports seat but the seat frame was narrower and would have required the additional seat rail support. A few months ago I purchased a pair of '72 - '73 sport seats that included the seat mounts and slider rails. As the car is undergoing some substantial repair work due to previous modifications and rust issues I was not sure it I would still be missing any of the mounting hardware for the new seats. The outer seat mounting supports were removed and had to be reattached. So at this stage I will not need the additional support rails.

Again thank-you for the information.

Edit: Reread the thread and misunderstood what you were asking. I think you do have the sear rail support. I'll leave my comment in case I misunderstood my misunderstanding. :)

Here is a photo of the part I think you're missing from my '68. The arrows points to the 6 mount hole screws I removed to take the piece out (this is actually a photo I use to get the car back together again). The seat support rails mount to the 7 holes in a line just above the arrow locations. It's hard to see which is the edge of the rusty part and which is the edge of the rusty car. But its pointy to the right (front) and kinda blunt on the left (back). And since the photo is taken from the top, you can't see the side. It's actually 'L' shaped. You can usually find a set on Ebay, but you never know what someone has listed it under. Also note that you need both a driver and a passenger side...they're mirror images of each other.

Hi Von,

Its been some time since I have been able to get a look at the car, from my understanding, yes that is what I believe I might need. You will see in the pictures that the seat base I have fits just short of the mount on the inner sill.

If not then I might have a more serious body issue. Well more than I already have.

Kind regards
Chris
