911 modifications

New to this list and to 911's
I have a 1966 911 coupe is ther a way to
improve the handling ie sway bar or cross bar? It feels light in the front end.
I am a 356 guy so 911's are new to me. Bob

Yep, a sway bar will improve the handling immensely. My SC is quite different form the early 911s so I would suggest doing a search here. I'm sure you will find what you need.

Also, try the earlys forum. Those guys really know those years.

Hi Bob, Welcome

Hi Bob,

I too had a early speedster and a 66 911, Then a 72 914, 77 308 ferrari and now a 74 911. I have (mis)spent my young adulthood thrashing, (auto-xing) and am now thinking about a few track days and a nice daily driver.

To your question, it depends on what you want from/with the car. First you need to asses what you have and what condition things are in. A car of this age has got to have some serious issues unless it was well maintained.

If I recall correctly, the 66 didn't come with a front bar, but first, i would be concerned with chasis integrity, (lack of serious structural rust or funky crash repairs), then bushings, then shocks & tires.

As usual, budget, time and final desired outcome will set your goalposts.

Is the car still a 2.0 with 6 single solexes???

Loved that car,
chris

have you replaced the ball joints & front suspension bushings yet? do that first

how old are the shocks? what brand are they?

in fact... is the car new to you? have you replaced the brake hoses and fuel hoses? those can kill you and/or the car

Bushings, shocks and stiffer torsion bars will help, as well as a chin spoiler. Sway bars will help in the twisties only.

Start with the simple stuff first... check the tires, front end alignment, then bushings and ball joints.

My '65 has a front through-the-body sway bar. It was original equipment I think.

You might consider a shock tower bar that connects the 2 front halves of the car. It wills tiffen the resistance for body roll if I am correct. I have used them in a number of vehicles including my 79SC and it tightens up the front end.
