What kind of Early Whale tail is this?

I'm chasing a 1971 barn find / project / Basketcase.
I guess which category it falls int depends on how rusty the undercarriage is when I get there.
I finally got some basic pictures.
Here's one of the rear. I can't identify the whale tail.

Is it stock?
Aftermarket?
Worth keeping on the car? or worth throwing in the dumpster?
Thanks,
Richard

Thanks Ben,
From the two pictures I have, it looks all rubber. So that was the factory option?

All the early whale tails I've seen were fiberglass with a wide rubber lip, so I assumed the fiberglass one was the factory option.

Anyone else have confirmation that this is a factory tail?
Thanks,
Richard

if rubber is good ..no sunburn someone may want it as it was an option.... i believe from the dealer.
just like all the vettes that had chrome bars and louvered hoods as well as splits in the rear windows cut out and that were changed. if nothing else hang it on the wall in the garage...i wouldn't toss.

I agree with the "hang it on the wall" comment. This is one of those weird and generally unloved items that, in future years, has the potential to be rare and sought after because 1) its odd and ugly and 2) so many folks tossed them because of 1).

A buddy at work has one on his '78 and I think it's pretty cool.

Here's a pic of one on a '78 SC.

It was a factory option 1977-79, I believe.

The grille is missing on the car on the original post.
