Do a top end to help sell the car??? upgrade too?
 

Well I am trying to sell my 1982 SC but I think the high milage and the oil consumption is inhibiting sales...

I was planning to do just a top end to make it a bit more desirable...

What I am worried is if I run into worn pistons and cyl....what do you think at 190K...then I just may have made a bigger mess since I can't just put everything back together...(pistons rings being in the right spot, etc...)

What do you guys suggest?

Also what am I looking at in terms of price? if I don't have to change major components?

Also I guess the only machining I would need is in the heads? new vavles and guides??

Also will the addition of a Euro CIS and 964 cams make the car more desirable??? i have sourced both of these parts for relatively cheap...

my personal preference if I was a buyer to buy as is at a great price then do the rebuild myself. This way, I am assured that the rebuild is done correct. At 190K, it would seem that price is going to drive the sale, depending on what condition every thing else is.

Kelly blue book is a good source for pricing, does seem to underprice porsche's but it will give you some ideas. kbb.com

I think at 190k, a top end is just asking for trouble. At that mileage you should go for a rebuild.

Perhaps you should drop the price of the car. There's no way you're going to make back the money from a top end... or even a full rebuild. If you were going to keep the car that's one thing, but putting $5-$10k into a motor, that you plan on selling as soon as it's done... well that's a bit on the nutty side.

Dan is right; if selling you need to cut your losses, ($, time, and pain), just dump it and move on. Whatever you get for it, if you add that to $ you were contemplating in upgrades/rebuilding, should be able to buy a great new/other car. My .02. :cool:

If the car is concours condition, then you might be able to find 'just the right buyer' if the engine was rebuilt. However, if the car is in average (and average is pretty darn good on these cars) then I would say don't do the rebuild. You've driven the car a lot, and it's depressed the value of it.

Assuming that the rest of the car was in good condition, I would guess the price tag would be in the $8K-$10K range. On the lower range if it's a Targa (less desirable by most people). Your car will be compared to $13-15K cars with a recent engine rebuild.

Of course, that's CA prices. There are many of them out here. Elsewhere it may be higher...
