911 mechanical ignition assy repair?

Has anyone successfully repaired a early ('74) ignition assembly? My targa's assembly catches in the start position one out of every three times. I've removed it and noticed the wheel lock mech was hanging up now an then. I plan on soaking it in contact cleaner and re lubing the assy in hope of freeing it up. I' thinking about removing the welsh plug on the end to re lube . Is this a good idea or am I asking for trouble? I think whatever mechanism that prevents the driver from re engaging the starter w/o turning the switch all the way off is hanging up. Any help would be apppreciated.

I have done it a couple times now.

Start by replacing the electrical portion of the the ignition switch. A PITA laying on your back trying to get the two screws out. But doable. Don't buy the cheap vesion of the ignition switch. I went through two in two months. The OEM one is much better.

If this does not solve it then it's a mechanical problem with the stalk. This is a bigger PITA. Need to remove the entire ignition stalk, drill out the cylinder pin. Remove the cylinder and fix / replace whats broken.

Gettng the stalk out is the hard part.

Good Luck,

Chris

All the newer locks make you turn off before reengaging starter. If your mechanical portion is failing it's best to replace the whole thing. You just have to find someone who knows (has experience) on how to rekey the new one so you can use your original key. I agree the OEM is the only way to go.
