What are these cut off tabs in the drivers side light well?
I have a '67 912 with original paint and no accidents that anyone knows of. Took the headlights out to replace the seal, check for rust and clean. Passenger side was what I expected inside (empty) but driver's side had some cut off tabs that appear to have been installed before the original paint job.
Anyone know what they were or were for?

Either the fender is from a 1968, or the headlamp bucket is from 68-89. The later buckets have provisions to mount the sealed beam style mounting brackets. These brackets interfere with the original headlamp adjuster screws of the glass lensed housings from 67 and older

The headlights screw into the the tabs. Don't know how you would hold them in now as the tabs are mostly gone.

Mine have an external retaining ring that hooks over the lip and is held in by one screw at the bottom. '67
Seems my "no wrecks" 912 had a replacement fender from a later model installed at some point. |

Or just the bucket was replaced.
Fender benders don't really count as "wrecks". A previous owner may have been more conscientious than you think by installing a virgin fender vs mudding a wrinkled fender. |

The gentleman I bought the car from would not have known of this (nor probably the guy before him). If it is a replaced fender or bucket then it was done a long time ago while the original purchaser had it (until 2001). |

We both learned something about your car (and close relatives) thanks to TRECup.
It's all good. |
