Magnesium alloy will form a grey patina or coating from oxidation; it is also considerably softer than aluminum. Scape it a bit with a knife. Without the ID number it would be hard to determine the internal parts. Jim

A little info about the year and model of the car would have helped!
If it is a factory Turbo, prior to '87, it would have the Type 930 transaxle, which were always aluminum, from the start!

MY car is a 76 Euro but has a 915 5 speed tranny, i am tryin to figure out which one it is, so i know if i will have to worry about hopping up the hp without worrying about the tran. I have the original 930 tranny but really like the 5 speed, it is geared perfectly for how i drive, thank guys
