retro fitting seats into 911?
 

Today I went milling around my local U-Pull-It yard to see if I could find a suitable light to retro-fit into my duck-tail as a third brake light.

While walking about I came across a 2002 VW Cabriolet with a relatively nice interior. The seats are manual and can be had for $70.00 for the pair. Maybe less, I gave the lady a few twizzlers when checking out today and she gave me the lights for free. So who knows what discount I might get if I give her a whole bag?

So my question is has anyone ever tried to fit a seat other than a true Porsche seat or aftermarket into a 911? Or hopefully one of these? All input and thoughts on how this could be done or if it is a stupid idea are welcome.

You can make most any seat work with some metal and some welding to make brackets.

And you may even be able to re-dye them black (I'm assuming that's the colour you want) instead of recovering. Might save a few bucks.

The issue is usually the width, particularly near the center tunnel and that the seat is a little offset from rails in 911s compared to E9 and E24 BMWs for instance. Anything can be done but I imagine recovering and fitting the seat will be much harder than just getting one of the many terrific retro options out there. That being said I 've done some transplants and you can end up with a really cool look if you don't mind fiddling a bit.

Yeah, that's a valid point. If those trays on the sides of the seats don't come off without buggering something up, the seat will be too wide on the outboard side, I think. Still, for $70 it might be worth trying out.

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies so far. The cabin in the VW is tight. It feels far more narrow than the 911 so I don't think the seats would be to wide even with that goofy tray. That being said the tray would be one of the first things to go, it is only held on by two Phillips screws.

I only took a quick look but the seats ride on three tracks. A center I beam type rail. and two tracks on the outer edges. One attached to the sill and one to the tunnel. Both of those have a wheel in the track. You can see one of the arms that a wheel is attached to just aft of the tray and under the seat hinge bracket cover. I guess I would need to take a seat out to get a good look at the bottom to see how it could be mounted.

If I were to go forward with this I would have them recovered to look similar to the Singer seat with the grommets.

Move forward?
