SC cams regrind to 964?

While I'm into my 3.0 rebuild, I'm going have my stock cams sent out to upgrade to the 964 profile.

What is done to the cams to obtain the 964 profile?
Do they weld metal on, grind some off?
Just wondering what the real difference is.

Thanks

Michael

why not some webcam 20/21s ? nice low end/midrange improvement, as opposed to a more top end improvement with 964s. and they're fresh, not regrinds. do you drive more street or track?

Good question.. and nice explanation regarding the difference between the two profiles. Understanding the improvement in low end/midrange, where do they fall with regard to top end?
Also, assume the 20/21s work well with CIS?

Anyone have a set kicking around?

Thx

Both are recommended for 3.0s. Low end grunt is better than top end if you do the street scene.

I did the 964 cams on my 914/6 as the low gears and weight gave me the grunt I needed....the top end was a nice addition. Went with new cams and had to machine the end off of one to lose the power steering drive.

See post #4 and #5. Interesting. I never knew this.

John,
It's a street cruiser. don't plan on tracking it much .. maybe not at all.
I was interested in the 964 cam as it is recommended for 3.0's by Bruce Anderson.
Also, I can keep the cost down by using my stock cams. I haven't heard you can re-grind an SC cam to a 20/21.

Bob,
Thanks for that link. It explains what's going on with the regrind.
