While draining my gas tank i took off the fuel level sending unit . When i went to put the sending unit back in I over tightened one of the nuts and broke one of the 5 studs that is attched to the tank that holds it down. is there any way to repair that???

I haven't done this, but wonder if you could drill thru the broken fastener and put a bolt thru from the inside? Put some epoxy on the inside of the bolt head to secure it in place. Have to be careful of the filings as you drill.

Good luck
Richard

Be very careful drilling on your gas tank. They like sparks.

Oh damn sorry to read that Brother

Sorry can't help, but have to agree, be very careful drilling out that stud. All I can see is to place a similar sized stud with flanged bottom, make a thin cork washer & sealant, then use the nut while holding the stub in place at top. Sorry this is what I would do in this bind. Alternative would be to remove and take it to a radiator shop to weld a new stud on after draining the tank

Really sorry Brother

To other readers with less experience with the 911, our cars do not require that much torque on the fitments so use this as an example. I always have to (scream) warn my buddy that loves to torque the crap out of his 87's bolts and nuts.

If you can drill it out, and I would remove the tank to do it as I would want it filled with water, you can get a stud rivit nut, you might even get it in a metric but they do have from 6-32 thru 3/8-16

No worries, now you know. Heck When I replaced my Oil Level Sending Unit, it calls for 18 in lbs but it leaked so I ended up turning the nuts another 1/4 turn to stop if from leaking.

5 studs on a low torque application? Maybe you could get away without actually having it on there.

Yes, it would bother me too.

IT'S KILLING ME RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!! I might have some relief . I seen an old post and they metioned using a barrel nut. I think i have enough thead left to do that. The bad part about it is that the tank looked like NEW inside.. WHY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be happy it is clean inside. You think you are ever going to be sloppy reading torque specs again? Heck no. This is how we learn.

Drilling the gas tank is safer when full of gas than when empty. Consider chucking a piece of dry ice in there to displace the vapors. Also, run air through it for a couple of hours. I would not use an air compressor because of moisture potential - maybe a fan with a makeshift funnel allowing the gasoline to evaporate. Make sure the drill is brand new and if you figure out the right drill size you may be able to run a tap through it.

You are darn right about that Bob. Next time I will use common sense also. 18 FT LB AM I CRAZY!!!!! What makes me mad is I knew better.I even stoped using the torque wrench and STILL popped it.But THANK GOD there is GREAT news!!! I just filled it to the top and NO LEAK. THANK YOU FATHER GOD!!! I ran it around town taking quick turns and zero leaks!!!! That glory I must give to GOD!!! Very happy. I even glued the broken nut/stud and it doesn't even appear there was any damage. I will bring it to Church today and let you guys know if it is still ok.

Never trust the in/ft conversion written in the Bentley books and the likes or what one might think he is reading when working on these car, use the native value which is the Nm (Newton Meter). Most torque wrench have dual scale.

This is a cheap lesson, it could have been a more critical component.

Are you serious? You think God concerns himself with things like sending unit studs?
