24 Hour Kart Race at Elkhart Lake
Endurance Karting is staging a 24 hour kart race at Road America on October 5. We need a team of 8-12 drivers. We've got 4-5 right now who are interested. All you need to do is pay $4500 per team (about $400 per driver) and show up. Everything is provided - karts, fuel, mechanics, etc.
http://www.endurancekarting.com/ I'm not sure if they're using the full course or not?? But that would be one hell of a 4 mile ride at night in a kart! Anybody think they might be interested? -- Curt |

Raced SCCA for years in the 70's and loved it. It also loved my bank account! Started racing enduro (lay down) karts that went up to 120 mph and had a ball.
Overhauling the motor on a kart cost at least $25 (vs $5000) and tires cost $200 and lasted half a year (vs $1000 min and good for two races) so you can see why lots of people do it. Almost impossible to get on their back and corner like its on rails, a kart is really a lot of fun. Sounds like a lot of fun and would love to do the race! Now to get the time off from work... Only downside I can see from their website is that the kart is limited to 50 mph, so smooth driving and no scrubbing off speed will be very important, as well as fast pit/driver changes. No mention of lighting for the night time portion of the race and the karts have no electrics. Would be fun if it rained... Where is the track located and whats the closest town with a large airport? The kart guy is based in NC but believe that the track is in WI? Joe

I'm interested. Are these the 10 HP carts they describe on the website? I'm not sure I can handle a full race shifter cart...at RA a racing shifter cart is probably faster than my 911. I have done both the long and short course at Road America and know it well. How do I sign up?

Wow, that sounds like a blast. I wished they had something like that on the West Coast. I've never driven Road America but it is for sure one of THE best tracks in the US. I used to enduro race karts too and was IKF National Champion in the expert class in 87. Joe is correct, smoothness will be paramount as well as consistency. Also, don't underestimate the energy drainage. Unless you do it all the time, are used to it and in good shape you will be "spent" in a very short time. It is sensory overload for EVERY sense you have and the most intense, exhilarating thing you can possibly do.

These karts are limited to 50MPH, which is plenty quick on a tight course, but might seem slow on a big course like RA?? I have no idea how they plan to handle the lighting other than maybe some kind of battery-powered lights on the karts?? I'll get more info on sign up and payment details. I'm sure there are limited openings for teams. -- Curt

Karting at Road America
I was out to Road America for the historics last year. They have constructed a kart course and I bet this event uses that. Here is a discussion:
http://www.roadamerica.com/races_motorplex.htm Here is a map: http://www.roadamerica.com/races_motorplex_map.htm What you don't see in the map is that the topography has a significant slope from east to west (top to bottom in the map). For an enduro I would bet they run the long course. This small track is probably lighted. Yea, a 50 MPH top speed at Road America would be boring; most of those turns would be flat-out in a 10HP kart! Sounds like a blast!

I sent you a message, I am in. Your are going to need Canadian representation on your team!! Drop me a line and let me know if you still have room.

I beleive that the race would be on the new Briggs & Stratton Motorplex. It is located within the grounds of Road America (near the Carousel for those that know the track)
I have driven a kart on that track and it is OUTSTANDING! The track has very nice elevation changes and is very wide. I suspect these events will be a HOOT! |

I've got to rethink this thing now! I had visions of flying through the kink (on the real RA track!) at 50MPH at night. Let me consult with the 'team' and report back. -- Curt
