While sitting in the 1974 911... I notice
no seat belts in the rear seats...Is that normal?

My 75 has none, along with my 78 924. I'm not sure when they were made mandatory, but in 74 they were not.

How does that work with tickets?
will the cops ticket me? any ideas

I'm assuming you're talking about people riding when you would get pulled over... I'm not really sure how that would work. If you get a dick cop, you could probably get something. I'm sure others will chime in on retrofitting seatbelts if would make you feel better. People never ride in the back of my cars, so its no issue for me.

I always wondered if the law expects everybody in the rear of a motorhome to be seated and belted in?

I also have a corvette..
two seaters can be frustrating..

I have looked in to this as I own a 1931 Ford Model A which has no seat belts at all. What I have been able to find is that as long as your car conforms to original blue print spec you are good. This was some thing that they had to do when they made seat belts mandatory so that every one that had older cars didn't have to put them in. It is true a cop in a bad mood may write you a ticket but fight it with every thing you can, you did nothing wrong. My 78SC has no rear seat belts but as said before no one ever really rides back there so its not an issue. I have seen belts fitted back there but its so hard to get a person back there I see no reason to do it.

It shouldn't be an issue as that is stock for the time. however if you want to give yourself piece of mind just in case you get a bad cop. Just keep the seat backs down or take them out all together.

You will need to check out the vehicle code for your state to be certain.

In California, seat belts are not required for passengers if they were not offered as standard equipment at the time of manufacture, but other states will be different. I could not find any violation if seat belts were simply not there, in unoccupied rear seats.

New York requires occupants in the front seat to be belted, but rear seat passengers over 16 are not required (children are.)

Again, check your state's laws to verify your situation.

If they we not required in 1974, they aren't required now. You are only responsible to keep your vehicle up to the specifications of the date of manufacture. I would be surprised if this in not the case is all 50 states....same thing for emission's requirements....for now :-)
