Fog Lights...this doesn't seem right...does it?
Trying to figure out some electrical issues on my newly acquired '85 FTL. I turn on the headlights, but the fog lights do not turn on when the knob is pulled nor does the knob light up. However when I flash the brights the fog flights flash too and the knob lights up. I assume this is incorrect behavior. If my assumption is correct, any ideas on what might remedy the issue?
 |
You are right, it is incorrect behavior.
Fog lights do need headlights on to work. So power comes throught headlight switch to fog light switch. Fogs on 82SC's have separate relay, so 82 should be similar. My guess is that a previous owner got creative when installing the recommended headlight relay (the one Porsche never had - Pelican has a kit) and wired the fog lights to the relays as well. Look in your frunk and see if there are additional square relays next to the fuse panel and post pictures if there are. Tons of knowledge here to help you get it squared away properly. Others will also note to get the Bentley manual for wiring diagrams. |
How my fogs work is; light switch on, (either, parking or low beams), fog switch on. If you turn on the high beams, the fogs will shut off, which is interesting because it sounds like it's the one condition that your lights do work (while flashing at least). Seems like something is amiss in the wiring as 2utes has said. Cheers

Fog Light Relay wire
The wire that provides power to the fog light relay on an SC is Grey in color, probably a 14 or 16 gauge wire. It should be connected to the top side of fuse 5 or 6 (doesn't matter as they are jumpered together). That way, when power is provided to the low beams via the white wire going to 5 or 6, power is then available to the fog light switch. If you want it fused, move the grey wire to the bottom of fuse 5 or 6. Hope this helps.

+1 Fred, correct OEM.
Some people like me want the fog lights to function independently with just the fog light switch regardless of headlights. Just a simple change-over of the wires at the fuse box is required to do this. :) |
Yeap, PO/wrench mis wired it.
I have wired mine to work independently as DRL's or as FOG Lights, very rarely fogs in SoCal, LA County :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1312604117.jpg |

Good luck, Gerry http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1321835516.jpg |
Joe Bob, no seperate switch required, just an easy wiring switch-over.
Nice picture and info, Gerry Is that a normal relay/fuse panel for Carreras? Red pump relay is #7 on SC's and is all the way at the other end. #1 is black for A/C if installed. #2 is fog lights like yours |
