solvent to remove engine sound mat old orange glue?

Hi guys,

As the topic states. Removed my old original engine sound mat as it was crumbling to pieces all over the engine.

What is the best solvent to remove the old orange glue left behind?

thanks

if you can keep it soaked in lacquer thinner long enough it would work. or, if you can sacrifice the paint, automotive paint stripper or spray gasket remover. solvent might do the paint anyway.

I removed the "Neoprene" with White-spirit.

Perfect result.

What is white-spirit.
Mineral spirits?

Heat gun and a metal scraper?

KFC911 11-20-2011 07:29 AM

Personally I wouldn't use a metal anything (scratches). Heat would be good... I used Goo Gone and rags and a LOT of elbow grease...that glue is nasty stuff to remove. I know there are more effective solvents, but I didn't want to remove any (more) brain cells :). Since the OP is in the Diamond Blue club, here's an incentive:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1321802937.jpg

ps: I forgot to add...a partial engine drop allows for easier access.

I used Goo-Gone Gel for mine (with engine out). It's tacky enough to spray on and stay on vertical surfaces. I let it soak a couple of hours and then removed with a stiff brush, rags, and then some Simple Green and water. It didn't appear to hurt the paint.

It's a solvant , usually used in paint work or to wash the tools after painting.

It's not agressive.

My brother just removed a bunch of stubborn glue from his car using penetrating oil and a lot of elbow grease. I've seen the result, no paint damage and the goo is gone. best to wash it off right after words, of course. YMMV, but his paint looks great in the area 'treated'.

Pressure washer does a good job and long as your paying attention and not getting too aggressive because it will also remove the undercoat.

Thanks for the replies guys. Thanks for the photo as well KC, great work, and always nice to hear from a fellow CE owner.

Getting ready for a concours this coming Sunday. Shame to lose the original engine mat but no point in having something in the engine bay that is falling apart.

You can use Citristrip found at Home Depot. It worked great to remove the glue form the old carpet inside my cab and should do just fine on your sound mat.

brake cleaner will take it right off with out damage to paint underneath. spray on and wipe off, simple as that.

This is what I used when replacing the sound mat.

Cheers,

I do know that Acetone is wrong. I did what j911brick did - used a pressure washer but bought a gallon of "Adhesive Remover" from Lowes. Worked great in combination. Probably about the same strength as the Citrusstrip. Never tried the 3M product.

Probably a high pressure nozzle - one of those that is a single brass piece - on your hose with one of the correct strength strippers would do the trick as I stayed pretty far back with the pressure washer.

Scrape off what you can and simply glue on a new sound mat.

hcoles 11-21-2011 09:39 AM

I tried a few things including goofoff, ended up "rolling" it off using pieces of rubber.

Jerome74911S 11-21-2011 11:06 AM

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover works, but wear an organic solvent filtering mask, lest you dissolve your brain, also.

RWebb 11-21-2011 12:26 PM

1st - just use a plastic or wood scraper

2nd - pressure wash if the motor is out - be careful of all electrical items & hoses for oil or air, etc. left in the area

3rd - Stop. Decide how pretty you want it to be. If you are putting up a new sound pad, just do that.

Buckeye 11-21-2011 03:39 PM

Do not remove the glue from your car. Glue ~20 small round magnets to the back of your new sound mat and magnetically stick it to your car. I did this to my car and it looks like you glued it in
