3.6 conversion going Supercharged!!
My 3.6 conversion is ready for the next level. I am going to install a TPC Supercharger....I need a project for the winter. Part were already ordered from TPC, engine is out and starting with surgery.
Chassis is a 1976 S and engine is a 993 Euro Varioram '97. I was initially planning to do just an upgrade to RS cams, but on the last event of the season I saw a car from a fellow club member who made me change my mind. The car was '75 with a 993 TPC Supercharged engine...I took that as a message from the sky...."you have to go supercharge" ![]() Back to my car, I expect some challenges. From my first conversation with Tom at TPC, it seems that the fact that the engine is on an earlier car bring some additional complications. Mainly, the crossmember (engine carrier) needed to be modified to fit the 993 engine into the '76 chassis and it seems that this will require some adaptation to fit the bracket for the Compressor belt tensioner. On top of that I noticed that my crossmember has the support for the coils welded exactly where the bracket for the tensioner will need to be. Can anyone help with suggestions on where to move the coils? I would like to take advantage of the engine being out of the car to do a thorough maintenance. I am planning on the obvious : valve cover seals, plugs, plug wires....any suggestions here? Tranny will also be rebuilt. It is the first time I take it out after the conversion and after at least two very active DE seasons, with more than 40 days of track. So, it would be a good time to check what the almighty 993 engine has done to it. I already know that the 4th gear synch will need replacement ( it was grinding on the track when downshifting from 5th). So far I only took the differential out and I am already glad I did. I found one of the magnetic cylinders of the speedometer ring has fallen of and was sitting in the differential housing. Funny enough, it was intact, but I am not sure how this could fall off. I will post a picture of the part later, to get your views on this. Other repairs/mods going on parallel: rear trailing arms bushings will be replaced by Elephant Racing gear- this was the only pending suspension upgrade- and the body will go to have the bolt-in cage replaced for a full welded cage tied to the suspension, hoping to improve rigidity of my old chassis. Again, any recommendation on this front is very welcome ![]() I will start posting pics later today, but I hope there is enough here to get you excited with my project....I am planning to take it slowly ( through the winter), but this weekend alone I dropped the engine, removed the intake, cleaned the engine, replaced the trailing arm bushings and dismantled part of the tranny....and I got a bit closer to my wife wanting to divorce me ![]() Stay tuned...

Wow. Hopefully you were also able to sneak in a beer emptying or two on the weekend as well. Somehow I don't think you'll be moving slowly. . .you don't seem to be the laggard type.
Good luck! |

I think you need to upgrade the gearbox if your still running the 915. A supercharged 3.6 should be well above the 400 hp range. My turbo 3.2 is around the same so 1st & 2nd gear means no more fun. The roots type supercharger may be even harder on the box because of the instant torque.

I already did all the usual upgrades to my 915, which include Wevo plate and side cover. I also upgraded to the stronger shafts with 110mm CV joints, so I get some reassurance there.
This is the first thing I asked the guy running the setup I mentioned on my post, and he has been running the 915 for a while now with no major issues, apparently. I guess I will not be spinning the wheels that much!!...and eventualy I will have an excuse to put a G50, or a turbo tranny :-)

Head over onto Rennlist where a member recently installed a TPC supercharger with the protomotive injector kit (instead of TPC's unichip).
Tiptronic Supercharger Project - updated dyno chart - Rennlist Discussion Forums BTW, are you installing an intercooler or AW injection? If not, you should. One of a more experienced member in RL tried to run (and compensate with Motec nonetheless) w/o the intercooler and the engine gave up at the track due to heat. If just on the street, living in a colder climate, running good 93 gas, doesn't run the car too hard, then you may be okay. |

As for your coil question...mount them anywhere availble. One place is to tuck them in the left side corner above the engine mount. Another is to mount them where the heater blower used to be.
Now...the 993 coil-to-dist-cap wire is short and will limit your mounting. But the 964 one is longer and allow more flexibility. Since you're buying new wires, it may be a good idea to buy the 964 one. But check on the resistance/impedance difference the two. I can't imagine there would be any difference, but never know. |
