3.0 upgrades
Im currently working on an 83 sc911 widebody conversion. I have been advised to upgrade motor to a 3.6 or a 3.2 to help with the power issues. Is there anything I can do to my 3.0 to create more power....bolt ons?

I recently bought a used 3.0 that had recent upgrades - Not cheap to do, but a very nice motor. Dyno'ed at 209 RWHP

If you're going to rebuild the motor anyways and have some money, I would recommend boring out the 3.0 and making it into a 3.2 short stroke. Those thing get zipping around pretty quickly and plenty of members on this forum have conducted such an upgrade

There's quite a few upgrades for the 3.0, search for more expertise, but I'll start it.
1) Easiest/most economical - backdate HE's to early style or go with SSI's and a better flow muffler. Actual power estimates vary, but at least 10+ hp. 2) Early '78 -'79 (or euro) SC Big port heads and CIS, maybe another 10+ hp. 3) 964 cams, 5+ hp (?) and higher rpm band. 4) 3.1 short stroke Mahle Max Moritz 98mm kit (big $$, maybe 10 hp). 5) Dump the CIS and go carbs (poor fuel economy, maybe 10 hp) or specialty injection (big $$ as well). I'm probably off on the hp numbers, but it's a start. I'm in a similar position (I've done #1), I will probably do #2 & 3 with new Mahle 9:3:1 CR P&C's since the MM 3.1 P&C's are so expensive. If you do these mods with some chassis/interior weight reduction, I think you will have a fun 911. |
If you do 1,2 and 5 from above you'll have a spec911 engine. They produce between 230 and 250 HP depending on carb size, tuning and mufflers. The peak power will move from 5500 RPM to 6200 RPM.

His pistons are 9.3 (83SC). The only thing missing is 9.8 pistons to get to 250 with 46mm carbs and race mufflers. The secret is the high RPM breathing. The torque doesn't change much from CIS but the engine will pull to 7000RPM with carbs. You can do the math but I bet you'll find that the CIS torque number at 5500 RPM will yield 180HP and at 6500 that same torque number will give 230 plus HP. It's basically like putting in better cams. The CIS kills the top end performance.

A bolt-on low-boost turbo kit running 7psi should yield close to 300HP :cool:
That's if you're not scared of turbocharging :D Many have done that too... it's the most cost effective "power-up", but make sure your motor is nice and tight to begin with (i.e. no oil leaks, and valve guides/compression/leakdown are all OK etc). It would certainly compliment the "turbo-look" you're going for. |
