Does your fuel gauge fluctuate?
My fuel gauge fluctuates when I go over bumps, it seems to follow the gas sloshing around in the tank. Is this normal or do I need a new fuel tank sender?
I searched the archives, but can find no previous post on this.... Thanks!

There is an aluminum tube in the tank that somewhat "buffers" the movement of the needle in the gauge. If that tube is gone or has fallen from its mounting, the gauge will be much more erratic.

Mine's relatively stable. The oil gauge, however, resembles a toy boat in pool full of cannonballers.

Mine fluctuates because of a grounding irregularity somewhere between the ground contact on the back of the gauge and the innards. There are a few thread on this. Cleaning the contact to improve things did not fix it. The 'erraticness' is worse when it is near empty. I can trust that low fuel light however. It goes on and off depending on how long I pull G's to the left or right. The small holes which allow the fuel into the aluminum tube slow the response to be appropriate. My Oil sender shows the oil level come up with warmth and with idle - fairly steady and predictable.
I bought a new fuel sender and it isn't any different than the original. I still have the original if anyone needs it - send a PM with an offer.

I put in a fuel sender (new to me/used) about 10 years ago in conjunction with my front end wreck repair (bought the car wrecked and repaired myself...with a little help from a Porsche certified frame shop). Anyhow it has been eratic since day one, but I am pretty sure the sender I put in was a good one. I'll check the ground on the back of the gauge. It's good to know that I should not waste my time/money installing a new sender.
