Message 1:

[previous message: From: Malm, Robert; Tues July 03, 2001; ROBERTM@cpd.ci.concord.ca.us ; My name is Robert Malm. I am a police officer and traffic/auto theft investigator with the Concord Police Department in Concord, California. Recently our agency towed an abandoned Porsche. The vehicle has been stripped of the engine, transmission and interior. I am unable to determine the identify of this vehicle because all of the identification numbers and plates have been removed. I was hoping members of your organization might assist me in identifying this vehicle.
This is what I know about the car:
1. It appears to be a 1967 Porsche 912 coupe. I base this assumption on the lack of side marker lights and a model emblem that was on the center of the engine cover below the air intake grill. The engine mounts are in the center of each side of the engine compartment. There is no provision for a dry sump oil tank under the right rear fender. The vehicle appears to have been stored outdoors for many years.
2. The metal identification plate on the right front of the trunk compartment is pried off and missing. The numbers stamped into the body behind the right side of the spare tire wheel have been ground off. The square data plate on the left door hinge area has been removed. High gloss dark brown paint is visible under where these plates were. The car was painted light yellow and the car is now off white in color. The car has no license plates or identification papers in the glove compartment. Sheet metal patches have been welded into both sides of the floor pans.
3. The car is equipped with medium brown vinyl upholstery. The upholstery is missing from the left door. The numbers "556" is stamped into the center of the left interior door frame.
4. I made an educated guess that 556 is the last three numbers of the VIN presumably because Porsche engineers wanted to match the doors to specific vehicles.
5. I studied your records and determined 1967 912's were made at both the Karmann and Porsche factories. I determined there could be seven combinations of VIN's that end in 556. Those VIN's are 461556, 462556, 355556, 458556, 459556, 460556 and 354556.
6. Using police information data bases, I determined these VIN's show no reports of theft.
7. I also decided to check the VIN's of 1966 Porsche 912's. One of the numbers I checked was 352556. This VIN is listed as stolen out of Los Angeles on 3-19-77. According to records, this car was green and has never been recovered. LAPD records show this vehicle to a 1967 model. I now appear to be at a dead-end. Can anyone help me identify this car? I have taken digital photos of the car but I cannot send them from the terminal I am now using. I will try to send them through my home computer.

From: Malm, Robert; Mon July 23, 2001; ROBERTM@cpd.ci.concord.ca.us ; I just wanted to let members know that the John Doe 912 has been identified.
Thanks to webmeister Rick Becker and Alan Butler from Porsche Cars North America, the vehicle has been identified as a 1967 "Kaffe Braun" 912 originally delivered to Los Angeles. The VIN on the car is 355556 and is
registered to a Concord resident who recently moved (or disappeared) to the Atlanta area. The car is not stolen and I have not been able to contact the owner as to why he removed the VIN from his car. As I suspected, the last 3 digits of the VIN are stamped on the inside of both doors. Doors were hand fitted to the body during the assembly process and this was Porsches' method for making sure the correct fitting doors were hung on the correct body.

Incidentally the car is now for sale through a lien placed on the vehicle by the tow company. Please contact Tiffany at Atco Tow (925) 827-1869 if you have an interest in the vehicle. Don't send this car to the crusher!
