3.6 conversion

What do I need to put a 3.6 in an 86 911? Motor , oil line changes, what else? will the flywheel/clutch work? will my headers work? wireing changes?
just want to plan ahead. thanks

Joe Bob 11-24-2011 07:45 AM

915 or g50 trans?

T Dominick 11-24-2011 07:52 AM

915

You going to need a conversion flywheel. The 3.6 uses a dual mass unit.

chaw704352 11-24-2011 08:25 AM

I am doing the same (993 varioram into a 77 with a 915). 993 heat exchangers will fit but 964 won't. Will need a new muffler solution. Not sure if 3.2 headers will work.

You will need to rewire or buy a conversion harness from PMS or Timmins. This requires the 964/993 ECU. Beware of the 1996 ECUs that have an Immobilizer (i.e. "drive block") that makes it not work in the conversion (ask me how I know).

You likely need a new flywheel to mate the 915 to the engine (PMS and several other options there).

Flywheel pulley should be converted to a single pulley (otherwise you will have to modify the cross bar and engine tins quite a bit). Engine tins will need some cutting anyway. Check out Rothsport; I bought their fan adapter and flywheel pulley and it is well made).

Possibly will need two oil coolers as well (though some get by with one).

Throttle cable is another need. Timmins (or Instant-G), PMS are solutions or create your own with a 964 cable or an after market universal cable like Lokar (if you are handy at fabricating).

Check out my two 3.6 lists (search threads posted by me). they are pretty complete (though it may not have all available options and is based on my set up and options). Jeremy has a good thread. Search will yield a ton of info.

For starters you'll need one of these................

You can use the 993 heat exchangers but the angle at the ends makes it awkward to hook things up, I'd suggest some 1 3/4" headers, either B&B or Fabspeed just because they have heat.
I used B&B w/ 964 heat inlets and 911 heat outlets and a 964 heat crossover pipe on a 964 and on both of my 993 swaps, The muffler is a Flowmaster but Magnaflo #12568 is probably a better choice.

You'll probably want to use an RS heat tube on top.

You should certainly have the DME and harness that go w/ the engine and you will need a conversion harness too as well as a conversion flywheel, your existing clutch is fine as long as it's in good shape. The issue w/ '96 is that they do not have replaceable chips, driveblock(immobilizer) isn't an issue as long as you can swap in a non-driveblock chip. OBD1 DME's are used on US MY95 and all RoW n/a 993 and is certainly easier to deal w/ than the US '96-98 OBD2 DME's

The stock passenger fender well mounted oil cooler will certainly be inadequate unless you live near the arctic circle, best practice is to add a 2nd valance mount in series, but some guys get away w/ a 2nd cooler in the drivers front fender. A single valance mount would also be fine for most users.

I did 1 conversion w/ Patrick parts and used Timmins(Instant-G) for the second, I had a better experience w/ Timmins

There are certainly many threads here that it would worth your while to search for.

I used 993 HEs, swapped the flanges on one side. Here are some options on muffs, cats and heat.

I have motor its a 964 from 93.I have computer and harness. want to go with headers, I am hoping the ones I have from the 3.2 will work.

911TT33 11-24-2011 12:23 PM

The 3.2 has 1 5/8" headers. The 964's have 1 3/4" headers I *think*

Where do you get the carbon fiber RS heat tune shown in the picture above?

74threeliter 11-24-2011 09:58 PM

Just completed 3.6 (1991) conversion to 74' chassis, using Timmins kit and all is going well thus far. Plenty information here via SEARCH or google it for some informative pelican posts.

This one was made and sold by Thom Fitzpatrick, I don't think they are available any longer. I think Rennline may have a similar product

I have 1 3/4 Georges european headers on my 3.2 will they work on the 3.6?

JeremyD 11-25-2011 05:20 AM

yes they will.

Basically there are three main areas - #1 is headers - looks like you have that covered.

#2 is Electrical - you need a harness for the DME - then you need to make a connection (not part of the harness, typically) to connect the starter, oil and temp sensors - back up light, etc. (and mount coils, etc)

Then you need to connect fuel - The fuel line connects on the passenger side of the 3.6

I have a couple threads on the subject

T Dominick 11-25-2011 02:30 PM

I have the harness and computer for the 3.6 , I have a 3.2(DME)motor in the car now will that harness work? or is there an additional adapter harness needed for the 3.6 to the car?
thanks for all the info!

You need an adaptor harness

look here, Instant -G

T Dominick 11-26-2011 05:22 AM

thanks Instant G sight is great!!

CabMike 11-26-2011 05:57 AM

I did this conversion last winter (1991 3.6 into a 1983 SC) and had no issues using Instant G (Steve Timmins) parts. Steve was very helpful both before the sale (when I was selecting my options) and after when I had questions as I was going through the install.

Kevin Stewart 11-26-2011 08:08 AM

yea if you dont have all the ends just buy the harness conversion, Kevin
