Please Help....How do you get these off?
 

Hey folks,

I'm trying to remove the trim from the front bumper but I can't get these nuts off....:mad:


The smooth rivet under the black rubber turns with the nut, I've tried needle nose pliers to hold the rivet but that didn't work. I tried penetrating oil and still after 30 hours these things will not come off. Is there a secret to removing them?

Ps...I'm having the car re-painted back to Ossi Blue so I really need to get these off so the bumper can be preped and sprayed.

center punch and drill from the outside. use a drill that's slightly larger than the stud.

What John Walker said. The corrosion on the back side of the carriage bolt froze the nut and the steel bolt cut the aluminum slot round causing it to spin. Alternatively you might be able to get a nut splitter over the nut. Replace with stainless or use antiseize on reassembly.

I think that you'll have to either cut the nut off or drill out the flat cap. If you can access the nut cut it off with a Dremel loaded with a heavy duty cutting wheel. If you can't get to the nut that way try holding the nut and drilling the flat cap off. You may just be able to grind the cap off with the Dremel and cutting wheel. Get the thicker cutting wheels and take your time because the wheels are fragile and tend to blow up.

Nope , just age and weather conditions ...

Just as John said .. center punch the head the i would start with a smaller bit while holding the nut with vise grip or similar (so it wont spin) ... then step up a size or two bits till it about the size of the outer thread ...

Or you can go with a larger than the diameter of the stud and drill the head off just watch the aluminum under if you hit it with the drill it will pull thru ...
