Remove the ashtray and a Garmin GPS fits perfect.

Just wanted to share a tip I found out while playing around in the car. I found that if you remove the ashtray a Garmin GPS fits in the void perfectly. This is especially good because my Garmin GPS has a MP3 player in it, so all I had to do was get a cassette adapter and now I have digital tunes as well as GPS through my factory stereo.

How is it secured in the ash tray holder? Did you then hard wire it in as well? That's pretty slick. I have an AV80R made by Bendix (similar size) and would like to know how you are wired. Right now I'm having a slight problem with it as when I plug into cig lighter, I blow a 20 amp fuse. Mine also works in my plane but I don't want to go plugging anything in to the plane and tripping breakers. I'm thinking I have a bad power cord. Any info on how you are set up would be appreciated.

Another option...

I stuck one of the mounting discs on the underside of the Cruise Control 'brain' in my '89 & it worked fine...

Cheers,

Paul.

What I did to secure it was. I used the suction cup windshield mount to hold the gps. I then unscrewed 2 philip screws that hold the inner plastic track that holds the ashtray to the dash. If you remove he ash tray and look up to how it slides into the dash you will see the inner plastic track. That unit easily comes out with only 2 Philips screws. I then drilled two small holes and ran a zip tie through them and around the suction cup gps mount. Very simple and stealth set up. I didn't have to hard wire any thing. I tucked the extra wires from the gps power back in the inner plastic track that holds the ash tray. It's a perfect cubby hole to hold the wires and the gps sits infront so you cant see them. Look close at my pic and you will see I just ran the power cable up and into the cig lighter.

This spring, I've a plan for that "cubby hole,..and that is: to mount an AC vent there that will be fed from the outlet that (now) wastefully blows cool air at your feet!

nice setup.
