Flag Mirror Problem on 83 911sc

Hey Guys:
I have a small issue. I bought my car 12 years ago, but the electric mirrors never worked. I decided to finally get into the door and figure out what the problem was. Based on tearing everything down:

1)The mirror motors appear to be 87-89 based on the part numbers, they actually appear to be in good shape...but for the broken mirror glass on the drivers side compliments of my attempt to remove what I thought was an early version mirror (prying out on the glass), not the locking ring type.
2)The harness from the car to the mirror has been cut away such that now all I have in the door are the bare exposed wires, no harness.

My questions are:
1)Can I even wire an 87-89 mirror motor to an 83sc, or do I need to go back to the earlier version mirror motor?
2)If the answer to 1) is that I can wire these newer motors, how would I wire a new harness to the 83sc wires (bare in the doors) that would then fit to the 87-89 intact harness inside the mirror casing itself?

I've searched the forum for answers, and found tons of posts on flag mirrors, wiring, etc., but haven't been able to find a situation like mine...
Any help would be sincerely appreciated!
Thank you ahead of time,
Christian

I think it can be done.

You will need to research the leads that go into the white nylon connector inside the mirrors.

Do the nylon connectors mate up? That carry six wires on each side. They can be re-arranged.

I have the diagram for the 86-89 mirror connections as well as the SC connections.

I believe that maybe 4 of the connections will be standard between the the two and the other two can be figured out through trial and error.

What info do you have?

Bentley manual has a decent wiring diagram, the connectors have numbers on each slot for reference.

Thank you Bob and Warner. I do have the Bentley manual.

My problem is that while the harness in the mirror housing does have the nylon/plastic connector, with all of the pins intact, the harness inside the door does not have the plastic connector and all of the pins have been cut off of the wires. The wire colors on the new motor are different from those in the harness in the door. In fact, I tried to feed the harness in the door up through the hole leading to the mirror and there was barely enough wire to reach...I will have to add more wire also.

It's good to know that I can mate the newer motors to the older harness...I just need to figure out how to do it at this point. I saw in another post that a gentleman had soldered the wires in the mirror, rather than mate via connectors, I may resort to that (If I can figure out how they mate). It would be better though if I could just mate up via the connector I would think.

Sounds like it will be trial an error to get this accomplished.
Thank you again for the replies.
Christian

You need to get bullet type connectors if you decide not to use the nylon connectors. You could then solder in the mirror and then bullet connect in the door. They should come apart somewhere.

I bet that connector unit is not proprietary to Porsche.

Hi Bob,

Thank you very much. I'm by no means any kind of a guru when it comes to this stuff, but do enjoy doing it...that said, I beg your pardon and sincerely appreciate your patience and time, but:
1)What are bullet connectors? *Edit*: Nevermind, I figured out what they are...
2)What does this mean: "You could then solder in the mirror and then bullet connect in the door"? *Edit*: guessing that you mean to just do this to the exposed ends and new wire...
and
3)What are you telling me here: "connector unit is not proprietary to Porsche"? Are you talking about the connector unit in the mirror housing?

Thank you again Bob,
Christian

Ok fair enough

1.

2. The nylon connector is in the mirror. I am saying you hard solder the connections in the mirror you can use the bullet connectors in the doors. You could also do the reverse if you want. It is important to have a way to remove the mirror without major electrical surgery.

2. Yes, sorry. The connector in the mirror. I think if Porsche use it then VW/Audi use it. It may be able to be sourced somewhere. Maybe even Pelican if we knew what to search on.

3. Since you have the mirror half of the connector intact, I would opt for searching for an old harness that has the pin connectors in the nylon piece (the car side) . When you find one then you can match it up to the mirror connector.

This is what I would do for now. Get some 14 gauge wire and a bunch of alligator clips. Hook a clip to each end of a 2 foot wire section. Then make a dozen sets if you are OCD enough. Wire those clips to the wires in the door and then to the plug in the mirror and fiddle around until you make sure they work correctly before doing the deep search for the connector.

I have the 86-89 mirror/door wiring as well as the SC wiring. You should have no problem figuring out the wiring if we know the starting point of each half.

Pic is of a similar connector near the brake master. Someone should know what they are called.

Hi Bob, thank you again for all of the help! I now understand, and think/hope I should be able to take it from here.
Thank you again Bob, and Happy Holiday to you!!!

Christian
