need help using permacoil
 

The rear thread that is used to hold down the fuel bar on the driver's side manifold is stripped.
I picked up a 6m X 1.0 permacoil kit. It has a blue handled threader, a slotted drill bit, and the coils--and instructions which I'm not entirely clear on.
First off, I plan to do this without taking the manifold out. Is this recommended? Or am I going to have to take it off?

I looks like I'll have room to fit a drill back there but I don't know.
If anyone has any tips for fixing this please help. Thanks.

Come on warren/superman/rarely...some of you must have done this...I'm doing it TODAY when I get home..let's hear some advice!

Haven't replaced threads yet, but I would think I would be easier with the manifold off, providing you can get it off with out more trouble! I do think a time-cert would be a better fix than a helicoil or permacoil. To my knowledge, and guys can straighten me out on this, the coils are just a spring that has the cross-section of the outer and inner threads. Not as much strength as solid metal. The so called time cert is a solid piece that has threads on the inside and out, but the thread forms are set up in a parallel fashion. It is much stronger the any of the coil fixes.

Not really sure about "Permacoil" brand, I've never heard of that one. I do, however have some experience with "Helicoil" inserts. That is what we used when I was doing aircraft maintenance while in the Marine Corps.
These guys were pretty straight forward and easy to work with. I could go into deatil but you can probably get more detailed information at their website....

As far as doing the repair with your manifold in place, personally, I would recommend against it.

Thanks guys. I had my dad talk me through it and give me confidence to excute it. It was quite painless. Drill out with 1/4" --into aluminum, easy but scarey. Drill with the threader using WD40, then coil it in. Took an hour. Could have been done if I had complete confidence in what I was doing, just a matter of a minutes really. No problem. The injector 'ticking' on that side has now disappeared it seems. I just hope that I can really rid myself of all injector ticking by making similar repairs if necessary on the other side.
