Red face Electric speedo in a '71

I just realized the reason why I have the incorrect speedo in my '71E....The 915 transmission in it is newer than '75, so it has the electronic sender on it. So now I have to change the face, odometer, and needle, on the speedo to make it at least look correct. I will post picks as I go. Has anyone else attempted some thing similar?

Yah, I have my hands full with this one.
There is lots to be done, but it will be a beauty in a few months.

I don't know but I am curious to find out as I may move to a newer transmission on my car - meaning the same issue.

You will also have to run wire(s) from the dash to the tranny nose cone.

Dunno if the speedo itself will need a new source of power (besides the illumination).

The cheapest speedo to buy would be one with 85 mph max. dial, as no one wants those. Dunno re extra cost to convert one of those though.

I hear that No. Hollywood will not touch a speedometer for less than $200... you should call them for info tho.

IF you find out anything, this would be a good place to post it...

Good Luck.

911Etarga,

Does it still have the 71E motor? How's the rest of the car?

If it does, I'd almost try to go back to a 901 trans with correct speedo. It will be worth a LOT more. Probably more than the cost of doing that.

Where are you located?

It wasn't clear whether the speedo was already functional or whether 911Etarga finds a need for the needles to match. If the former, there are two wire connections from the speedo sensor to the speedo gauge plus source voltage and ground.

As for the needle matching the other gauges, as tcar dryly noted, there may be other areas to place higher on the "to do" list.

As for tcar's suggestion to revert to a 901, I say, "thanks, but If it ain't broke, don't fix it". 911Etarga. Do you need more project suggestions? I thought not.

Thanks for the replies guys,
Yes it has a 2.2E engine, but the last owner put the 915 in. For a driver, I think the 915 will be great, not original, but better in many ways. I just want the car to be as close to original with out over spending, so I am:
Re-building the engine(ouch.),
Re-building brakes,
Re-vinyling/carpeting most of the interior,
New seals and some rubber parts(bumpers, etc),
Paint work (just touch ups),
And a million little things like new hood crest, new shift knob, fix dash, blah-blah.......

I'm trying to do most of it myself (not the engine though), so we will see how it turns out.

Brent

Heh, heh. Oh, sorry. I couldn't help it. Making it nice is one thing. $. Making it close to original is something else. $$$

I suggest you spend most of your time in the for sale areas of the Internet and build up your parts inventory. When you're ready, you'll have what you need instead of being at the mercy of what you need yesterday. Having a budget helps (a little) too.

Good advice, the cost of these parts are going up every day.

I have a budget, or should I say, had a budget. This forum has been very helpfull to find good used stuff, for a good price though.

I will put some pictures up when I get it back from the engine re-builders.

I think you need to change the transmission case, or part of it??? I'm just changing the guage to look just like an early speedo, but it will still be electric. I ended up going with North Hollywood, they quoted me 220.00. That way it's done right.

It might be easier to use a compatible (electronic) speedometer. I believe elec. speedos began in '77. Please confirm.
