Carrera 6 vs. 911S motor

OK, it's Saturday morning and I'm too lazy to research this on my own right now! What are the essential differences between the Carrera 6 motor and a standard 911S motor. Do they at least share the same case or is everything different? -- Curt

This is from Anderson's book.

Carrera 6

Titanium rods and rod bolts.

10.3 to 1 pistons running in Chromal cylinders. (Aluminum cyls with chrome lining)

One piece forged rocker arms with lash caps not screws.

Dual plug heads.

46ida Webers.

Smaller 226mm cooling fan.

The engine case is made from Magnesium. This was made during the period that engine cases were made from aluminum (and sand cast I think). The case for the carrera 6 I think was also sand cast but in magnesium.

In addition the majority of the engine castings were made of magnesium.

I think it would be possible to build a carrera 6 "spec" motor, but not a replica motor.

Also could you imagine what a set of those pistons/cyls would be worth.

I am sure there are more differences but this is what I got from BA.

Chris, I think your pic could be of Ernie Spada's (Ernie Spada is from Portland, OR) 904, running a six, but most 904's came with a carrera 4 cyclinder, 4 cam engine. Gosh, wish I had a pic of a 906 that I could post...a beautiful race car! That's where you'd find the Carrera 6 engine...

The 906 (901/20) carb motor was first used in the 904 in 1965. Later, an entirely new car was developed - the 906 or Carrera 6. There was also an MFI 906E motor. Here's a pair of 906s from Rennsport last year:

Cegerer:

The 906 motor was also used (with some Al instead of Mg pieces) in the 911R. The MFI'ed 906 motor used throttle slides and made 220HP. I just sold a set of those things.

The tricky parts of replicating these things is the heads, ignition system, and real 906 cams which are end-oiled. Some of the engine casting are NLA of course, but reasonable facsimilies could be made. Mahle will make the P/C's,.....

From experience, these are tough to drive on the street. Many years ago, a local fellow drove his genuine 911R to and from work and its a real bugger to live with.

What a glorious sound, though.

Cegerer,
Thanks for the 906 pic. IMHO, this was the most beautiful race car Porsche ever produced (even though race cars are supposed to be purpose-built - not necessarily pretty). I would even trade my 911 for one Twenty years ago, one could be had for about $20K.

Sherwood,

I agree 100%. What a beautiful machine. Here's another angle on Mettleman's 906.

Funny thing about the pictures is that is answers 2 questions I've had about Porsches recently:

I've been wondering what Gulf Blue looks like, since I've been considering a car that was originally that shade. There's a car in the background that appears to be that color (it says "Gulf-Porsche" on it).

Second, there's a crappy old '67 targa that's been on eBay about a million times that's up again. Every time I see it, I wonder where on earth they got the wing-mounted rear-view mirrors; one of the race cars in the picture has them.

Thanks for settling those.

Emanuel
