Setting gap on the speed sensor
I recently replaced the speed and reference sensors in my 1987 Carrera. The speed sensor was frozen in the bracket, necessitating the removal of the bracket from the car. That required me to reset the gap between the speed sensor and the flywheel.
Unfortunately, I have just discovered an error in the Bentley Service Manual. In one place, the manual lists the gap as .08 mm. In another place on the same page, it lists the gap as .8 mm. That is a big difference. I initially set the gap at .08 mm and turned the car engine over. I then saw the error in the manual and reset the gap at .762mm, which as as close to .8 mm as I have in a feeler gauge. Can anyone confirm the proper gap for the speed sensor? It is very difficult to set that gap due to the tightness and location, but also because the feeler gauge is flat and the flywheel has curvature. How much tolerance does one have +/- with this gap setting? Does it have to be dead nuts on or is there some leeway? |
honestly, I just took my old one out and put the new one in.
I recall reading something about using a nickel or dime to measure the gap but I never did because I was afraid of dropping the coin into the flywheel, and because I didn't know how to back the bracket out - so I went for it. |
I seem to recall the 0.8 mm. I used a piece of wire as a gauge and no I don't think it has to be dead on. Ken

It is very common for the sensor to freeze in the holder.
Yes the gap should be .8mm, and there should not be a problem if you set it at .762mm |

And it fired right up. One of them was a monster To get out . I needed a grinder to remove it. |
