I need new seats in my '78 SC. The 24 year old leather has reached the end of its life. Recovering is too much money. I like the Recaro RS seats and will probably get them. But I have some questions that I'm wondering if any one could answer. I'm not worried about the back seat access, I plan on installing a roll bar. I would like to use the stock seat belts for street use and a 5 or 6 point system for DE's or Autox. Does anyone have a set up like this? How do the seats fit? Head room? Would you do it again? I've seen pictures that show the RS seats in newer cars. Will there be any problems installing them into an older car?

Tops,
You can do the dual seat belts, especially with a rollbar. Takes some work on the attachment fittings but its not that big of a deal. As long as the SC is not a targa your headroom should not be a factor as the bar is a bit back from your seat back. Have been in several cars with a rollbar where your head could hit the bar if the seatback was leaned way back but I am 6' 1" and that does not help either. Lots of padding helps... Joe

Also, I believe the factory RS seats are just (very expensive) leather-covered versions of the Recaro SPG model. So, if you don't care about the leather, and wan't to save $1000+, just buy a nice set of SPG's!

A few words regarding the seats:
The seats in the RS are NOT Recaro SPGs, the side bolsters at the thighs are lower, the seat is somewhat wider and the shoulder area is not so tight. Actually now Recaro sells the same seat as the 964 RS seat, called the... RS. The SPG is a full race seat, thight, hard to get into, out of, but holding you like a vise. Also, leather is not a good idea if you plan on track work. I was lucky enough to do a few laps as a passenger in a GT3 with leather buckets, and was slipping out of then at every braking, even with a 4 point harness. The fabric holds ten times better. Alcantara would be a nice alternative. GeorgeK |

Sorry, I got my Recaro models switched around. The factory RS seats are not leather-covered SPG's as GeorgeK mentioned, but I believe they are leather covered versions of the "Pole Position" model.
Just so there is no confusion, Recaro does NOT sell a model/shell called the "RS". However Euro-tuner FVD Motorsports sells a Recaro "RS" model, but it too is just a leather covered "Pole Position" shell. If you want to compromise for the street I would go with the leather pole positions (FVD "RS's"). If you want the best support and more of a "one-with-the-car" feeling, go with the cloth SPG's. If you are not stuck to the Recaro's, I think the Sparco racing shells (Atlas, Evo, Pro2000), are the best way to go. Also, here are some pics of the Recaro's: the first one is the SPG, second is the Pole Position, and the last is the FVD leather Pole Position which they call the RS. |
