CDI to Distributor

Hi folks...

Looking for some guidance on connecting the distributor to the CDI and coil/transformer. I've perused many of Grady's posts, and understand the wiring diagrams, but there's still some grey area without some pics or confirmation.

I'm installing a CIS engine into a 1973 Euro/Carb tub. Here are my questions:

1) There's a three pin connector coming out of under the CDI unit shown in the picture (2 wires and one empty slot), is this the wiring for the disty and coil/transformer connection? (Neither pin is grounded on this connector) If this is the proper connector, which pin is which? If this isn't the proper connector, where do I find the ABC connections for the CDI?

2) The wiring diagram indicates there should be a ground harness connecting the disty and neg. coil terminal back to the CDI. Any clues as to where it should be connected on the CDI? Possibly that empty threaded hole on the base?

3) The dangling red wire goes to the CIS system, the warm up regulator I believe. Does this just need to be connected to 12v? (wiring diagram says connector 10 on the 14 pin connetor 84 if that's the case, but the wire color is different on the diagram.)

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the basic questions. This is my first Porsche project.

Kevin

If you use advanced search load Early_S_Man into the member field and place "CDI box" (or variant) in the keyword field you should have tons of reading.

I see three terminals on the 73 CDI box. Terminal 1, 4, and 15. Does the plug you show in the pic have little tiny numbers on it? I don't know what the CDI box may have on it but if something plugs into it, bet the terminal numbers are present somewhere.

Are you sure that plug is for the CDI unit?- it sure looks like the female side of my rear window defroster.

The power for the CD comes off the body harness, a single red plugging into the center wire of the 3 prong connector.
The connector in you hand looks like for the rear window defogger grid.

defrost

Bob... I believe you're right, it appears to be the defrost connector (the male side is still tucked away.

Tuchan... thanks for the diagram. Where, physically, are the "A", "B", and "C" connections on the CDI located?

I'm now doing a search for Early S Man.

Answered my own question. Found the CDI connections underneath. Should wear my reading cheaters more often. Now I need to find a wire harness that has the right connector. Any one have one?

You don't need the original harness. Use 1/4" faston connectors.

The way you remember the CDI pinout is:

A= Achtung! 460V to coil positive
B= Battery - Switched +12v from harness
C= Contact = wire to points
D= Ground. This is the tab screwed to the side of the CDI.
