You do realise that most of the Porsches and Ferraris that go missing from europe end up in Russia....

A year before I left Berlin, the Russians were seen to be loading several transport aircraft on their military base with Benz, Porsche, BMW and other expensive cars. When the police tried to get close and get more information on the cars, a diplomat interviened and stopped them.
These cars were stolen from the streets of Berlin (my 72 RS clone and 88 BMW bike went missing while I was there) and were shipped to Russia. Happens all the time... Joe

I'm sure that's where my '90 Carrera 2 ended up when it was stolen in Dec. of '99 here in NYC. Either that, or in South America. It wasn't a car you'd strip for parts. I put over $40,000 in upgrades into it that summer, before labor. The Big Reds alone were about $5000 before installation.
P.S. I have a copy of the video tape showing the bastards who did it, but it's black & white and not very clear. Only a few frames may show a decent face shot (bastards knew where the cameras were and wore baseball caps real low). If there is anybody out there who works with video enhancement, let me know, I'll send you a copy to play with. Yes, I got my money back from Lo-Jack. Could you imagine what the carfax reports would say, or better yet what the history printout from the Porsche club would read.

A little bit more seriously - it was very interesting to read "outside" view at us. About car history - sometimes it's really a problem even for us, especially about cars which come into Russia in early '90 - it was a great mess time. Later (and currently) situation is more under control. BTW, there is a big problem be a Porsche owner here - mostly die to hard situation with spare parts and service, even dealer can not helps sometimes, especially on early models. 2nd big problem is road quality - but Porsche transmission not bad for this. But - we have REAL cheap speed tickets (about $10 for 30+ km/h :-) WBR - GrayIce, webmaster of Porsche Club Russia (http://www.porsche-club.ru) '87 944 '79 924

Can't understand how you guys keep losing your pride and joys.....
Never heard of kill switches? Never thought of putting in a hidden switch to the fuel pump? If all else fails...folow the old saying....the only good thief is a DEAD thief.....make 'em good as fast as you can! After all....when the police arrive....and there is a dead body with a big nasty screwdriver in his hand....and you standing over him...there's only one story going to be told..the right one. Bob

Hawg,
In Berlin and the rest of Germany they have a flatbed truck that picks up the cars with a hoist while parked on the side of the street. Takes a slow guy 2 minutes, takes a good one 40 seconds. Seen it many a time... Considering that most of the flats there there are on the 4th or 5th story with no elevators, and you may be in one on the backside, no way to get down to the car in time even if you saw it happening. Guns are more or less banned for normal people in most of Europe, so no way to protect yourself or your car like we would do here in the states. Kill switch on the car does not help when the car is hoisted up from the street... In 30 minutes its over the border in Poland and then its gone forever. Paul, Have some good friends who are Russian. Spent many a year watching them from the other side of the wall as well and have seen their tracers coming up at my airplane more than once. I trust them more than I trust the Chinese, who we will fight a war with in my lifetime IMHO. The Ruskies still stole everything they could get their hands on when they pulled out of Germany, Putin or not. Can give you many references in Berlin (West or East, your choice) if you wish... Joe
