Will Sodablasting Remove Undercoating???
I spent 8 hours of hard labor and a pneumatic scraper taking off the interior floor coating of my resto project. The tub is going to the mediablaster next. Will the sodablasting media take the undecoating off? ...Or, am I back to the trenches with a scraper?

My car burned up in a fire and about 50% of the undercoating was burned to where it was dry and splotchy. I took a steel brush on a grinder to get it off. It was a long and nasty process even on a rotisserie. I took a scotch brite pad with laquer thinner to the undercoating that was still good. Then I primed, undercoated, primed again, painted and clear coated. It is one of those things that I am glad I did but don't ever want to do it again. Ever!

blasting media will just bounce off the factory undercoating. You are stuck in the trenches.
Undercoating Removal - The Fastest Method Yet! Follow this up with a knotted wire brush (cup and radial). then wipe down, prime and recoat. The process sucks no matter how you approach it. Good luck.

I called the blaster. He said they will solvent strip and wire brush it for me for "A few hundred bucks". I don't know exactly how much that is...but I think it's worth it!

this is why they use undercoating to shield the sheet metal from sand and gravel thrown up by the wheels
there are some nice pics of the Bosch (or is it Wurth) rotary brushes at work in other threads maybe someone has used dry ice to encourage flaking? |

dry ice will work, but you're going to need alot of it to remove all the undercoating on a vehicle. Jamie's method seems to be the best around.

I just determined the best way to do it...Hand the guy at the mediablasting shop $400, turn your back, and walk away. I don't want to know how they do it as long as it doesn't blow holes in my floorboards.
I guess it doesn't matter if it heat warps the metal. I'm going to re-undecoat it anyway, once I know there's no corrosion under there, and put in an RS carpet kit.

When I visited RUF they had 2 guys with heat guns with scrapers attached going at the bottom of 72 they were doing a conversion on. That seemed to work ok but I think the multi-tool is probably faster.
I wonder if the dry ice blasting will go through undercoat. It would seem that the cold might harden the coating so it will chip off.
