Borla exhaust
I was talking with a friend of mine who owned a 89 speedster. When he purchased it, it came with a Borla exhaust system. $$$. He had a stock exhaust put back on, he's kind of an original car guy. The car was sold two years ago, but he still has the exhaust. He said I can have it, if it will fit on my car. Can you enlighten me?

The Speedster exhaust is the same as my coupe's and I had a Borla (Single in and out) on it when I first got it. With the cat on, the exhaust is not too loud. It has a great sound and was well made. When I removed the cat and changed to a bypass pipe, the sound grew louder and it was impressive. Had a kind of F1 whine at high rpm's but still not obnoxious. I have since sold it to a friend and now have SSI's and a Dansk, which are not as loud. I would install it in a heartbeat if its free. All you need is a couple of gaskets, WD 40, and your there. And it is not too loud. Borla use to make 4 outlet exhaust with 2 in that I am sure is much louder.

Yeah...Borla used to make the dual in quad outlet exhaust. MikeZ had one...and now I have his. The sound is loud...and AWESOME. Oh yeah. It's LOUD. I try not to start conversations in the car because of it, nor do I try to start one after I get out because I can hardly hear. Of course, I don't have any sound proofing/padding/deadening and hardly any undercoating. You can only see one side in my pic, but you get the idea.

BigB,
I think your '74 is a two-in, right? The 89 muffler is a one-in, unless it had SSIs or back dated exchangers. I If it does not work for you, I'm a definite buyer, OK? Darn 3.2 rebuild is dragging [time & dollars], but it deserves a better muffler than the stock - I've been on the lookout for a decent used sport muffler. Please lemme know.

The later model single in style stock exhausts are far more restrictive than the two in that you have. Many 80's 911s are backdated to your style, either using older model exchangers [like yours!] or SSIs [even though the SSIs are a little too restrictive for the 3.2].
I think most people would think that changing yours to a single in setup would be a backward step. Seems to be more two-in than single-in mufflers being sold - probably for that reason.

Hey all,
My P.O. had a Borla installed, and I must say that although its a bit loud, I LOVE IT!! It has an awesome sound to it. I believe it's a single in, quad out? Or maybe it's classified as a dual out....not sure...really don't care. My wrench says it will outlast the life of the car without a doubt. It literally had to be squeezed in. The cracks in the picture below by the fitting are now fixed and freshly resprayed. regards,

Here's how I attempted to quiet down the Borla when I still had it.....San Diego has a 92 dbA maximum limit. It was good for about 10 laps then I had to do another "dew"

MikeZ, your Mountain Dew method is a bit like a trick I used when I was a school kid with my Triumph 650 motor bike. Where I live we have to do 6 monthly vechile checks called a Warrant of Fitness. Well, my Triumph was noisy as hell but I used to shove a ball of chicken mesh (it's the wire netting they use on chicken sheds) up each exhast to quiten it down for the test. Worked well.

BigBpainta, I'm worried about you...
First you discover the red line. Now you want a Borla. What gives? Do you HATE your neighbors? A Borla at redline sounds like a mechanical apocalypse.
