How many miles on your 915 trans before rebuild?

As the 915 transmission in my 136k mile Carrera failed... I was curious as to how many miles some of you have been able to eek out before rebuild time hits..... Or better yet, destroy me and tell of how many miles you have without a rebuild, and how wonderful your 915 transmission is still functioning!

My first 911sc had 200k with no rebuild on the engine or tranny and was running great. Sold it for 10k. My current sc has 164k with no rebuild and runs strong.

205,000 miles. No rebuild yet. But last time I changed the fluid there were a couple of teeth in there. Still shifts pretty good though.

I bought my car with 135K miles on it, and a good stack of service paperwork that did not include any tranny work. The odo now says 251K, but it's been broken a couple of years. I just rebuit my tranny because all the dog teeth finally broke off first gear. ALL of them.

I believe that it will vary from driver to driver. If you speed shift, force down shifts into first and second and beat the crap of your car, it probably won't last long. I had my 915 rebuilt at 80K miles. The 1st and 2nd syncros were shot by the PO. While we were in there, I had the wrech replace nearly every bearing, all syncros, dog teeth, sliders, etc. It was about $4K total including a new clutch and valve adjustment. I'm expecting the tranny to last at least 200 - 250K miles as I treat her nice.

This is good news ! I guess mine is barely run in with 87k miles - and still works like a charm.

Mine's got over 150k and it still works great. I can even perform the mystical "shift into 1st while still rolling" manuever. Mike

When I bought my SC a year ago with 112K the synchros were pretty bad. Now I've got 119K on it and they are getting worse. I'll be rebuilding it this winter.

I have just over 160K on my car. Just rebuilt the engine, but did not touch the tranny because it is working great. I double clutch on all my downshifts - every time. I usually don't put it into 1st until I am stopped, but if I have to, a double clutch into first will get the job done without any problems. Rex

My 72T has to have the oddest 915 yet. It will only shift into gear easily while rolling. The tranny has never been opened but the car only has <90K. It can be prone to grinding but hopefully a clutch adjustment will solve a lot of woes.

80K on my 85 but it would have been fine if not for my nasty autocross habit. Crunched 2nd gear a few too many times before I figured out don't do that.

No the thing was a daily driver. The guy I bought it from took very good care of it. I sold it 6 years later with 450 or so miles on it. Still no major engine work done to it.

Ron~ That's awesome for the engine... However, the post question is regarding the TRANSMISSION. Was it ever worked on during your ownership?

Patrick, I had it overhauled about a year after I got it. It had about 365K on it at the time. Other than a new clutch at some point before I owned it nothing was done.

Thanks! Do you know if the P.O. had it rebuilt prior to you ownership? 365k on an original 915 should earn you a spot on a Porsche commercial!

Pat, The PO is a good friend of mine. He told me everthing about the car and gave me all the records. Including the window sticker papperwork. No, nothing was done to it. The only upgrade to the engine was the Carrera tensioners.
