Are we nuts? SITE UPDATED!
 

Well, it turns out the camera's memory card didn't wipe itself -- we have the pics of the engine drop, and we've added them to the diary entry that details the engine drop.

Tonight we split the transmission from the engine (easy), and removed the clutch (which, it turns out, was thoroughly baked!), flywheel, muffler, MFI stacks, plunger pump, injectors, engine shroud, cam covers, and some of the engine-tray tin.

We accomplished a lot more than we thought!

The formal diary for tonight, including pics, will be uploaded this time tomorrow or Friday -- our time.

This is fun!

Matt, I am following your progress with great interest.

Feel free to email me with any questions you might have as I was in your shoes last winter. Glad to hear that you didn't drop the motor... only an idiot would drop the motor...a complete idiot, you'd have to be to drop the motor.
Anyway, the only limitation I will make is that you cannot finish your engine before I get mine back together...it wouldn't be right.

Guys,

Believe me, we are having way too much fun! Last night saw us get into the nuts and bolts of an aircooled six.

The flywheel bolts were a bear, but then I guess they would be, wouldn't they?

We pulled the fuel system and shroud and are currently trying to find an engine stand that will fit! BTW, I guess it's ok to mount a stand to the bellhousing through the existing transmission-mounting studs? They'd take the weight, wouldn't they?

Let me know if there are any specific "DO NOTS" that we should know about prior to mounting this onto the stand.

While your diary is a fantastic effort there is one thing that I'm scratching my head about. You two are novices yet you're working in a fully stocked professional repair shop. Where and how did you come to this facilty? Are you renting time in it? Many newbies will be working in a cramped garage or driveway. I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed this.

Orbmedia, my old man works for Ford Australia, hence why we have access to a fully-stocked repair shop, which, I should add, is open until midnight every night!

It's doubtful we would have tackled this without the privilege of being able to utilize such facilities. Having said that, our project is a breath of fresh air for some of the wrenches who have to rebuild Ford Explorer motors and repair live-rear axles!
