ebay hella foglights - real?
Hi,
A question for anyone who has a genuine pair of thru the grill mounted Hella foglights - item 1817000131 on ebay - are these actually Hellas? I recently received a pix from a reputable early 911 vendor with a pair of Cibie foglights & a pair of Hellas which he had for sale. The ones on ebay look remarkably more similar to the Cibies rather than the Hellas. Can anyone comment on them please. I have a friend who is interested in a set of Hellas - Not Cibies. Don't want to bid on the wrong thing. Thanks, Gary

Dave, you don't want those for the RSR do you?! They'd look much better on my car.

Thanks for the photo! The main distinguishing feature is the light "stalk". The Hellas I have seen have a much thinner stalk than the one on ebay. So still wondering if they are genuine. Can you tell from your lights Paul?
The item number was 1817000131. Thanks, Gary

Sorry for the poor pic (previous lame digicam) but this is what the 'real deal' looks like. The lens as well as the sticker inside the back of the case would clearly identify them as Hella H3 lamps.
Note that as someone else stated, these are foglamps. Driving lamps are a different animal, and considerably rarer & more expensive FWIW. ![]()

In the same Hella 118 shell there are at least 3 lights:
-The US fog, which is a 35W fog pattern, -The H3 Driving light, up to 100W and lights a mile of road, with ha high beam pettern, -The H1 fogs, which takes a H1 up to 100W and has a shorter, wide pattern. These are also called "italian driving lights", which they are not. The last two have a larger diameter lens than the US fog, via a thinner trim ring. BTW I have sets of each for sale. Not cheap. GeorgeK PS the set on Ebay is a H1 fog pattern Last edited by GeorgeK; 04-03-2002 at 02:03 AM.. |

Thanks for your input George!
At present the lights plus swtich, brackets & grilles are bid to $410. I've seen lights alone for $600 - but I guess that it depends on which Hella lights - right? The info on the various types of Hellas available for this application was very helpful. Gary

Thus, I believe these lights are way overbid. Definitely not worth the $410 the current bidder (what an idiot) has on them, much less $600. I'd stay away from these. Looks like a scam. Terrible feedback record on the buyer too. Run away. Run away now. Just trying to be an unbiased observer presenting straight facts. ![]()

Since RSR's didn't come with these anyway, I'm sure Dave wouldn't even consider placing a bid - even if they were legitimate.

Not that this really helps anybody at the present, but fairly recently I sold the above pictured NOS set of lamps for $350-ish and a concours set of brackets and real factory chrome horn grilles for 225-ish. The same price ballpark as this auction, but for pristine concours condition parts. The stuff would be worth somewhat more now, but the point is that items on ebay are frequently bid up beyond their true value...

I have two complete NOS sets and would never sell them for those prices. It is not about what they are worth, it is about what it would cost me to replace them.
