Post Half shaft bolt torque level

Finishing up my rebuild on my 1976 930 and am ready to torque the half-shafts back to the trans. If I'm reading it right the spec book calls for 120 Nm or about 88 ft-lbs. Is that correct?

Seems high. But they are 10mm longer than the 911 ones. I'd wait for an answer before you go any further.

No help. Just my 2c.

Half shafts are a toutchy-feely issue when it comes to bolt torque. I went with book spec. because they seem low on my 77 for some reason. I conquered the issue with new bolts at factory spec. using SAFETY WIRE. I did my 6 bolts in 2 sets of 3 each. Therefore ZTQ [zero tension quotient]...............Ron

So you went with the 88 ft-lb?

Will take your advice and safety-wire too!

Would split lock washers be a more suitable/easier means of ensuring a stable assembly?

The only appropriate washer for Allen bolts is what the factory has used all along ... new Schnorr washers at each installation! I have never seen CV-joint bolts loosen when properly torqued with new Schnorr washers. I feel that the Allen bolts themselves are only good for two installations, maximum! A little preparation in advance to procure new gaskets, bolts and washers goes a long way towards making srvicing CV-joints a reliable and trouble-free process.

Schnorr washers and DIN 912 Allen bolts are available in bulk from Metric & Multistandard Components Corp. at the following URL:
