VW guy askin help
hi guys,
Ive been looking around and have been enjoying the forum. Adam993's updating of a earlier 911 to 993 looks is awesome as well as Craig T's backdating his 80's 911 to ST looks is awesome. Now here's what i got. I have a 1969 VW fastback, over on THESAMBA.com we refer to it as a poor mans Porsche...a very poor mans Porsche. but the 69 shares some features with 911's other than body shape. The basic idea for my project is a 311RS (the fastback,Squareback,Notchback are type 3's im sure most of you know anyways) type car. I love the twistie's and am building this car to suit my love of Canyon driving. my question for you guys is in a aircooled 911 is the transmission supported at all at the bellhousing? or when you unbolt the hangar at the rear of the motor and loosen the nosecone mount on the trans is that it? if thats the case than i guess in terms of similarities the 69 and later type3's have a lot in common in engine mounting. i guess thats my main question. in keeping with 911RS2.7 type history my fasty will sport a mild ducktail and a chin spoiler. if the ducktail ends up not being effective it will be canned but it'll be fun to build. thanks in advance guys -Trevor |

Porsche flat six & 901, 911, 915 transmission have 4 point mounting. The two at the very rear of the car, and the two point "saddle" under the trans. No support at the bell housing.

thank you very much for helping me out.. i think like the 911 i might develop a "cradle" that will better hold the type 1 style transmission so i wont be breaking nose cones on a regular basis. now to figure out my mount block sizes for the rear sway bar...

A few thoughts:
1. If you are looking to improve your vw, look to the dune buggy world for transmissions straps etc. 2. Consider if you really want to improve your vw. If you are into collecting the less common beetle variants, then by all means have fun with it, but consider that many people spend much more resurrecting and improving an early vw, while just as many people are chopping up relatively solid 911 chassis. Aside from the somewhat collectible long hoods or more modern and desirable carerra 3.2s with a G50 transmission, there are the cars in between. Some of those in between have been well taken care of, low miles and some have become donors for backdate projects. Cars like those two types will also retain good value as well. ...but then there are fairly large numbers of 911 SCs and older that have not been well cared for and are only worth the price of their engines. One of these with a blown engine is almost worthless (I say almost, but certainly will fetch a lot less money than a decent early vw will in the vw collector world). If you are looking to hotrod a vw, (and since the same 4 bolts mount a 911 motor to a 911 tranny, or a vw motor to a vw tranny) then you could easily consider updating your vw with an old 911 chassis, retaining your vw motor (some of which make more power than some of the 911 6 cylinder motors). Porsche did it and called it a 912. You could do it and call it a lot of fun (and in the process, save a 911 chassis from the crusher).
