Early year carpet
Has anyone tried to use carpet by the yard and glue in their own carpet as a single piece rather than buying a kit? I know the type of carpet would determine how easy it would be to mould but I'm wondering if it's been tried.

Because of all of the contours there is no way you could lay one piece and make it look half way decent. Now, could you buy carpet, cut your own, sew and install, sure.

I agree with the above. You might be able to reduce the number of pieces somewhat by cutting out notches, V sections, etc. and make a fit. That would also take a whole lot of time. I made my custom carpet set out of a nice loop carpet cut to match the old pieces. It was pretty easy. The difficult thing was getting the bias tape and finding somebody to sew it on. I finally found a roll of the color tape I wanted and took the set to a place in T.J to have it sewn on. If I remember correctly, places I asked about it north of the border wanted something approaching $300 to sew the bias tape on the edges of the carpet pieces. I can't remember the total footage, but it was quite a bit.
