964 Oil Filler Tool (homemade)

The first time I changed the oil, I heeded the advice of many and got a large pan. However, I still made a modest mess trying to get 10+ quarts into the filler neck of the oil tank. None of the funnels I had really fit, and I hated being bent over the back of the engine at the same time.

So, $3.89 worth of PVC and one nicely-shaped funnel from Northern Tools & Equipment, and I'm in business:

I used a 90-degree, two 45's, and three lengths of straight to make this up. The funnel tip is long and fits snug into the topmost fitting. The middle 45-elbow rests on the inside edge of the fender nicely. From what I can tell, it should stay in place even with the engine running (during the final top-off procedure).

I also rigged up a coat hanger to hold the tool above my drain pan when done, so it can be stored without dripping.

Of course, I haven't actually USED it yet, but I think it should work fine. I'll let you folks know in about 1,200 miles.

Note: 1991 C4 shown...not sure how well this tool might work on earlier or newer models...

Looks cool. It might tend to slip however. Like all funnels do. Puting a small strap above the 2nd 45 from the top and a magnet or velcro at the at the end of the strap to stick to the underside of the deck (if metal) could hold it. Plus you could leave the oil container in the funnel while it emptys. I hate standing there holding all the cans. I use 14 of them. I've got a serious collection of funnels and none of them work quite right.

hahaha...nice show if ingenuity...

hopefully no chance of leaking or spilling of the body...

my technique

hold a rag under the fill tube...and pour the oil out of the beveled side of the bottle...I think they are shaped like this to give a fraction of more time before the oil comes out so you can position the bottle right...worst cast scenario I get a little oil on the rag....

I guess with the CIS box I just rest the bottle there and walk away...

Indeed. Those were two of the main reasons why I made the thing. I don't think it will slip, as the weight is bearing down on the end pipe (wedged, almost, down the throat of the tank) and the middle joint/elbow. Short of physically striking it, I think it will hold up okay. (Otherwise, I promise to post horrific, explicit photos of $4.00-a-quart Mobil splattered all over the driveway.)

I cut the base of a plastic coke bottle off on a 45 degree angle. It works well as the other end jams nicely into the filler hole.

This way I always get to have a clean funel, with no chance of sand or dirt getting in with the oil from a dirty used funel.

Also, I always give it a good clean first to get the coca cola out - I wouldn't want any of that crap getting in my engine

And I thought I was the only coke bottle recycler! Bill's right, it works great. Use a 3 liter bottle with the bigger opening. The soft, flexible sides make it easy to jam in there.
