Transmission Shift Rod (in the tunnel) questions...

I have numerous spare parts accumulated over the years, including some shift rods (normally located in the tunnel). I had thought of these as being all pretty much the same until I put them together and noticed a difference in length. These are likely all in the 901 through the 915 vintage. One has a marking "'70" in yellow paint, probably put there by me in the past. The others are unmarked. There are no parts numbers on any of them. I have the parts catalogs, and sure enough there are changes in the '71 to '72 model years (911 to 915 changeover?). Then in '74, another part number change which appears to last through '83. The outer tubing portion of each of these measures 82 cm 80.3 cm, respectively.

Down to the question: Does anyone know from their past experiences, or from having some identifiable (as to model year) shift rods around, what the lengths of these rods are to allow identifying which is which?

Length Correction

The length of the shift rods in the above post was incorrectly given in mm and should have been cm. I edited the post which now reads correctly. I hope that anyone who might have seen it earlier caught this. (I'm used to thinking in mm, not cm...)

I'm still hoping that someone might have access to a known vintage shift rod that could be measured, hopefully in the 1974 to 1983 range (non-Sportomatic). The photo shows where the measurements were taken. This is the length of the tubing the rods were formed from.

don't recall off the top of my head, BUT there is definitely a thread telling which will be for a 915 and which for a 901/911 trans. somewhere in the 2 million bits of information and detritus on here...

if the search engine does not work well, then try a Google site search

you might cross link the thread for the next guy when you find it...

I have measured and compared in the past.
\The pre 72 is longer than the 915.
I dont have any reason to know the actual length but to know the difference.

It's important if you only have one shaft.

BTW - inspect the right angled coupler with the cup for the shifter end to sit in for cracking. These have a habit of failing after a while.

Then many of us should consult with Kreskin (mind reader) on these matters.
