74 911--What do you think
Looked at a 1974 911 2.7 today. Having never driven one before I wasn't sure what to expect. WOW!!
Anyway, here are the spec on the car: 104,000 miles Not sure if its been rebuilt. Current owner (# 3) has tons of paper work on it but has not gone through it. Original paint, Magenta (Karminrot 109) The usual rock chips, one door ding, no surface rust. ATS alloy wheels. Short shift kit--I'm not so sure I liked this. 11 blade fan Original interior, not bad shape Factory sunroof Minor surface rust under battery Seemed to run and drive great. Slight hesitation when cold. No smoke or oil leaks I know this isn't the most desirable model, but what do you think. $7500.00 Keith

Keith:
There are many threads on the 2.7, the '74 being the best of the rest. If you would like to talk about what updates to look for, etc, send me a PM (private message) with your phone number.

Sounds a good price. marcesq is quite right in saying search for 2.7 info on the BBS. There's a lot of opinions of them, you'll see. Ideally, it will of had timeserts installed, and by now it will of had a top-end job, I'm sure, as 2.7s suffered from premature valve guide wear around 60,000 miles. I notice you're in Portland, OR, so it's probably not a hot climate 911 and might be doing just fine on its original engine - many seem to in such climates. I had a 2.7. I had the top-end done at 60,000, the mechanic - an experienced one - said all the headstuds were fine and he thought in climates like the UK (similar to PDX) there was little to worry about headstud pulling wise because it wouldn't be consistently hot, much.
However, if it did pull a headstud(s), and was due for a top-end job you could add $5,000+ or so to the cost of the car to get it right - probably more. Get a PPI done in all cases. Good luck. |
