Air conditioning

Hello,

I'm French and new on this forum ! So excuse my english !

I try to find an explanation in France, but nobody can answer to me. Can you help me ?

My car is an german car (delivered in Francfort) Carrera 1984 convertible.
Next it went to USA for some years, and came back in France in 1992.

The air conditioning system is strange :
- York compressor.
- Hand made support.
- Diffusers under dashboard.
It's not an origine equipment, but an US accessory I think.
Nobody knows what is this in European forums.

Who knows that equipment ? Can you give me details about it ?

Merci, ho sorry THANK YOU !

is what it appears to be to me. However, it is likely more efficient with all of those vents under the dash! You might want to consider replacing the heavy York type compressor with the lighter Sanden ones. It takes up less room and is much lighter. Makes it easier to change plugs, adjust valves, etc.

I see that you live in Grenoble. Do you really need/want to retain the air conditioning system?
Is it still functional?

It's an aftermarket system, for certain. Starting in 1984, at least in the US, Porsche had stopped using the York compressor and had switched to Nippondenso. Also, obviously, the vents and controls under the dash are aftermarket.

The general consensus is that the York compressors were junk, and at this point worthless. People often replace them with Sanden or Nippondenso compressors.

A good resource for information on Porsche a/c is Charlie Griffiths at Griffiths. If you email him your pictures, I suspect he'll be able to give you more information. Another good source of information is the folks at RennAire. RennAire.

I hope this helps!

Welcome to the forum!

Not that you need a good ac i grenoble, but for your engine's sake get rid of the York and replace with a Sankyo or Nippondenso. The york will vibrate the mounting bolts right off.

It looks very similar to the old longhood factory Behr AC. The York compressor definitely, and the dash unit looks like it- but unwrapped- though the center of the dash unit looks somewhat different than I remember.

Thank you for details !

My a/c is out of order, because a gaz problem I suppose (R12 gaz is forbiden in Europe).
But it's not very important with a convertible car !
If the weather is somewhat cold in Grenoble, I live also in Cannes (Cannes/California : same sun !!)...
I'll email to Griffiths for more informations.

Thank you again.
